Chieng Son farmers compete to develop the economy

With the spirit of daring to think and daring to do, farmers in Chieng Son commune compete to develop production, turning rocky slopes into fruit-laden gardens and bustling businesses. Thanks to that, many households have escaped poverty, with typical examples emerging with incomes of billions of dong each year, actively contributing to the construction of new rural areas in the border commune.

Ms. Hoang Thi Hoa, sub-zone 30/4, Chieng Son commune, introduces dried fruit products.

Coming to Chieng Son these days, it is easy to see that the appearance of a border commune is changing dramatically. Low-yield corn and rice fields give way to green tea hills, valleys of plums and green-skinned grapefruits stretching out. The whole commune currently has more than 2,180 hectares of fruit trees; 340 hectares of tea, with an output of over 5,000 tons of fresh buds/year; a herd of over 15,000 cattle, over 116,000 poultry; and an average income of 51.6 million VND/person/year. In that prosperous economic picture, the movement of farmers competing in production and good business has become an important driving force, promoting the transformation of thinking and crop and livestock structure. Over the past two years, the Commune Farmers' Association has coordinated to build models for planting and caring for fruit trees such as green-skinned grapefruits, oranges, plums, dragon fruit, crispy persimmons, and a model of raising cows in barns combined with growing silage. Thanks to that, many models with high economic efficiency have been replicated, with 1,625 households achieving the title of good production and business at all levels.

Mr. Vu Duc Quang, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Chieng Son Commune, said: The Association has 1,442 members, operating in 24 branches. Accompanying members in economic development, from 2023 to now, the Association has coordinated to organize 15 training courses on transferring production science and technology to over 700 members, helping farmers change farming practices and access organic and biosafety production. Coordinated to supply 112 tons of fertilizers with deferred payment for members to develop production; secured with the Social Policy Bank with a total outstanding loan of over 61 billion VND for more than 1,200 members to borrow capital to develop production.

At the introduction of the Commune Farmers' Association, we visited the model of purchasing, processing, and trading agricultural products and construction materials of Ms. Hoang Thi Hoa, sub-area 30/4, Chieng Son commune, one of the typical members who achieved the title of excellent production and business household at the Central level. Taking us to visit the dried fruit processing factory, Ms. Hoa shared: In 2021, with the desire to consume agricultural products for people and increase family income, I invested more than 2 billion VND to build a 2,000 m² factory and a dried fruit processing line. Each year, the facility purchases about 200 tons of plums and mangoes in the region for processing. Products are consumed through e-commerce platforms, stores and supermarkets introducing OCOP products in and outside the province, bringing in revenue of about 2.5 billion VND/year. The facility creates regular jobs for 15-20 workers with an income of 4-5 million VND/person/month, along with dozens of seasonal workers.

In Nam Den village, Chieng Son commune, we met Ms. Lo Thi Xoan, one of the typical members of the economic development association of the village. On the hillsides of the village, along with the green of the fruit gardens, there are endless green tea rows like silk ribbons embracing the hillsides, tea buds competing to stretch out in the early morning sun. While quickly picking tea, Ms. Xoan said: Thanks to the Commune Farmers' Association and professional agencies' guidance and assistance in planting and care techniques, the tea trees have grown well. Currently, my family has 2 hectares of tea, harvesting more than 20 tons of fresh tea buds each year. In addition, I develop livestock and poultry farming, earning over 200 million VND/year, helping my family's life become more and more prosperous.

Examples like Ms. Hoa and Ms. Xoan are the core elements, spreading the spirit of "Farmers competing in production and good business". Many households with good production and business not only enrich their families, but also become a support, spreading the spirit of solidarity, promoting the economic movement, contributing to building an increasingly prosperous homeland.

Saying goodbye to Chieng Son when the afternoon sun sets on the fruit-laden orchards, we believe that, with the right direction of the Association, the movement "Farmers compete in production and good business" in Chieng Son commune will continue to arouse the determination, dynamism and creativity in developing the family economy of each member, contributing to building the border land of Chieng Son to develop more and more.
