Female professor winning Kovalevskaia Award appointed Vice President of Ho Chi Minh National University

The Prime Minister has appointed Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Principal of the High School for the Gifted and Vice-Rector of the University of Science , Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, to the position of Vice-Director of Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.

In Decision 504/QD-TTg dated June 12, 2024, the Prime Minister appointed Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Principal of the High School for the Gifted and Vice-Rector of the University of Science, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, to the position of Vice-Director of Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.

The term of appointment is 5 years.

Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, born in 1974 in Quang Ngai province, graduated with a degree in chemistry from the University of Hanoi (now the University of Science). She then earned a PhD in pharmaceutical chemistry from Toyama Medical University, Japan.

She was appointed Associate Professor in 2014 and then Professor in 2021. In 2023, Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai was awarded the title of Distinguished Educator.

In the first 10 years after earning her PhD, she primarily focused her research on discovering drugs from Vietnamese medicinal plants. More recently, the professor has continued to conduct applied research, completing two products to support treatment of gastrointestinal cancer and arthritis using domestic medicinal herbs. To date, Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai has published over 80 articles in prestigious international scientific journals.

With her research on products from bee species raised in Vietnam, Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai's research team won the Golden Globe Award in 2017 and the Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Award in 2019. She was also awarded the Kovalevskaia Prize in 2021 for female scientists with outstanding achievements in scientific research and its practical application, bringing many benefits to life.
