Female employee tried to "steal" A4 paper from the company, but was stunned by her child's words.

Retelling her story, Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Huyen - living in Go Vap district, Ho Chi Minh City - wants to share more perspectives on "innocent stealing" by office workers.

A few days ago, her 6-year-old son needed double-sided A4 paper to decorate Christmas cards for his friends and teachers. Her family rarely uses paper, mainly single-sided paper. Without thinking, she happily said: "Tomorrow I'll go to my mother's company to get some A4 paper for my son."

The son protested, "Mom, you have to go buy paper. Why did you take the company's paper? It's not yours. Taking the company's paper is stealing!"

Ms. Huyen was stunned. The mother realized that there were signs of greed, anger, and ignorance, ugly actions, taking other people's things as her own so naturally that being wrong became normal. She often "conveniently" took a piece of paper and a pen from the company to use like that.

Even though, every day she still teaches her children "if you are hungry, keep it clean, if you are ragged, keep it fragrant", "if you find something lost, find the owner and return it"...

Taking other people's things as your own, or to put it bluntly, "petty theft" - an unethical act - can be seen everywhere. In this "thief" behavior, the culprits are not professional "pickpockets", shoplifters or children who are not yet aware enough, but educated adults, managers, employees, workers...

The act of "stealing" has been expanding, causing public outrage in recent days, with the story of a series of school meals being cut. The whole society was shaken by the incident of 11 students eating 2 packs of instant noodles cooked thinly with rice that happened in Lao Cai .

Theft can also be identified by construction contractors cutting corners on materials; repairmen reporting machine conditions that are not true to reality; technology motorbike taxi drivers asking customers to cancel trips on the app to avoid losing a percentage fee to the company and the customer agrees...

However, stealing is not just about taking other people's food, belongings, and money as your own. It is also about depriving others of their knowledge and time.

Plagiarism can be when teachers "cut" papers from regular classes to save for extra classes.

Or in recent years, that phenomenon can be named when the total number of scientific research publications in Vietnam has been constantly increasing. Many experts warn that the truth behind this number is the risk of violating scientific integrity, which is commonly naming people who did not participate in the research process as authors or co-authors or plagiarism. That is also a cleverly concealed act of "blindness", under the guise of... knowledge.

"Theft" cannot fail to mention the incident of the Director of the Department of Agriculture of Bac Ninh playing golf with some officials during working hours recently. Such "theft" of working hours is actually not a rare occurrence.

VTC news reported on the incident of the Director of the Bac Ninh Department of Agriculture playing golf during working hours.

"Taught" to steal from childhood?

Mr. Tran Trieu - the owner of the Zero7 fried banana chain in Buon Ma Thuot, Dak Lak - said that his shop's gas stove had just had its fire divider stolen. The person who took that round piece of cast iron the size of a hand and sold it as scrap probably only got a few pennies, but the loss was huge for the person who was robbed.

From that loss, the man lamented the petty theft of Vietnamese people. Mr. Trieu listed, people can steal manhole covers, remove railway screws, break logos, car wipers, remove motorbike rearview mirrors, even take away potted plants in front of other people's houses...

Mr. Trieu was heartbroken when explaining this petty theft. From a young age, a child going to school is accustomed to "stealing" sample essays and copying other people's test papers. They witness the "arrangement" of the observed lessons, the teacher naturally arranges the students to sit still, which students will speak, answer... If teachers and students cheat together, when the child grows up, how can he not see that being tricky and stealing is normal?

Let me repeat the story shared by Dr. Bui Tran Phuong - former Principal of Hoa Sen University - about the case of an excellent female student in Vietnam who was sent to study abroad in an educational cooperation program.

Recently in a foreign country, her first essay was evaluated as very good, very good but was given a score of 1 with a severe disciplinary warning. The reason was that her essay was discovered to have used many sources of information freely.

But like Ms. Ngoc Huyen, the female student did not realize that it was plagiarism, stealing. When she was a child, she was used to teachers providing sample essays, ready-made, and asking students to memorize them, and on exam day, they just had to copy them. From then on, students got used to taking other people's ideas and words.

An educational researcher from Japan, when returning to Vietnam, shared that the first thing he wanted to do was to teach everyone the lesson of never taking other people's things as your own. Because that is dignity, morality, self-respect, self-esteem...
