German police announced on January 13th that they are investigating recent sightings of unidentified drones (UAVs) at two military facilities in the country.
Police in the southern German state of Bavaria announced they, along with prosecutors, are investigating several incidents, including drones flying over military facilities in the towns of Manching and Neuburg an der Donau, according to AFP.
On January 12, police discovered 10 UAVs in a protected military area in Manching, which houses a military airfield and is home to Eurofighter fighter jets.

Witnesses also saw several UAVs at the same location on December 16 and 18, 2024. On December 19, authorities discovered three UAVs in Neuburg an der Donau, also at an air base.
Police said they have launched "extensive investigations" into the incidents because they cannot rule out the possibility that military facilities and defense companies are being spied on amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, police have not yet been able to identify who was operating the drones.
Der Spiegel reports that the German government plans to amend the Aviation Security Act this week, due to UAVs countering jamming transmitters and the detection of UAVs in German airspace.

This move would allow the German armed forces to shoot down UAVs, and soldiers would be permitted to shoot down suspicious devices using ground-based air defense systems. Fighter jets could also destroy unidentified UAVs with guided missiles, according to Der Spiegel .
Additionally, Bloomberg, citing several sources, reported that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's cabinet is expected to approve amendments to the Aviation Security Act on January 15.
