Having just "closed" an order for 500 hybrid fighting chickens for a business in Quang Ninh province, Mr. Tan said that after many years working as a worker in industrial parks in the province, in 2009 he returned to his hometown to start a business.
Realizing that the natural conditions of the commune were favorable for developing chicken farming, he researched and bought 500 hybrid chickens to raise. Seeing the effectiveness, he built a coop and expanded the scale of free-range chicken farming. Currently, on an area of more than 300 m2 of his family's garden, he regularly maintains raising 3 - 3.5 thousand chickens/batch, mainly hybrid chickens and fighting chickens.
Thanks to strict application of biosafety procedures, use of mixed feed and full vaccination, the chickens are healthy and disease-free. Each year, he sells 4 batches of more than 120,000 commercial chickens; after deducting expenses, he earns a profit of 350 - 400 million VND/year. "Free-range chickens have good meat quality, so traders come to buy them at home. Currently, all chickens that are eligible for sale before and during the Lunar New Year have been purchased," Mr. Tan shared.
Cam Ly commune has 24 villages, many of which have large gardens and hills, suitable for poultry farming. In order to develop livestock farming and create livelihoods for people, the commune has promoted propaganda and mobilization through local meetings, thereby changing people's thinking and working methods. According to statistics, the commune currently has more than 100 livestock farming models that bring high economic efficiency, creating regular jobs for hundreds of local workers.

A typical example is the pigeon raising model of Mr. Giap Van Huy (born in 1982), residing in Lich Son village, which creates regular jobs for 4 workers; after deducting expenses, the monthly profit is nearly 100 million VND. Or the rabbit raising model of Mr. Le Van Hau's family (born in 1980) in Dam village also brings in a stable income, creating regular jobs for 2 workers.
“After nearly 2 years of raising rabbits, I now regularly maintain raising 100-150 parent rabbits and 500-700 commercial rabbits. On average, each month, I bring to the market 300-500 breeding rabbits and 500 quintals of commercial rabbits, earning a profit of nearly 30 million VND,” Mr. Hau shared.
Although achieving positive results, through assessment, agricultural production in general and livestock farming in particular in the commune have not developed sustainably, small-scale livestock farming models have not created many jobs for local workers.
In order to develop livestock farming and create livelihoods for people, in the coming time, the commune's professional agencies and villages will step up propaganda and support people to expand livestock farming; replicate effective models and provide guidance on disease prevention and control, and barn sanitation. In addition, the commune will also proactively seek and expand markets for livestock products, increasing people's income.
Mr. Giap Van Tuan, Head of the Culture - Society Department of Cam Ly commune said: "We are currently reviewing the needs of the people to develop a plan to open vocational training classes on animal husbandry - veterinary medicine in the villages so that people can exchange, improve their knowledge, and access science and technology. From there, we can have good and creative ways to exploit local advantages and replicate effective models."
