On October 17 in Lao Cai province, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc attended the inauguration ceremony of the Lao Cai - Vinh Yen 500kV transmission line project. Previously, this project was successfully energized on September 30, 8 months ahead of schedule compared to the original plan.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Deputy Prime Minister assessed the Lao Cai - Vinh Yen 500kV Transmission Line project as a project of special importance to ensuring national energy security, contributing to concretizing Resolution 70 of the Politburo .
"The Government always strives to avoid power shortages in all situations, creating a solid foundation for economic growth of over 8% this year and over 10% next year," the Deputy Prime Minister affirmed.
According to the Government leader, the socio-economic growth target in this period requires the electricity industry to be one step ahead, increasing power generation capacity by 15-18% annually, equivalent to 8,000-10,000MW.
He said that last summer, the weather in the North was extremely hot, the maximum power consumption capacity of the national power system reached a record 54,500 MW on August 4, an increase of about 5,000 MW, equivalent to 10% compared to the same period in 2024.
This shows that the need for electricity for production, business and people's daily life is very important, especially in the context of unusual and unpredictable weather.

"Therefore, the 500kV Lao Cai - Vinh Yen line project is of special importance, increasing about 3,000MW of power transmission capacity from hydropower plants in the Northwest region and neighboring provinces to the national grid. In the future, it will meet the demand for electricity cooperation connection from China, ensuring national energy security," the Deputy Prime Minister affirmed.
With the strong direction of the Government, the coordination of local ministries, Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), Power Project Management Board 1 and the contractor completed the project after more than 6 months of implementation, 8 months ahead of schedule.
"This is a lightning-fast construction progress, a record in the construction of power projects, in the context of difficult and complicated terrain and geology, erratic weather, large construction volume... Marking the maturity of the power industry, as well as the efforts of localities in site clearance and ensuring construction conditions for this project," the Government leader assessed.
According to EVN leaders, after more than 6 months of construction, the project has completed the main construction volume including: Digging nearly 1.8 million m3 of soil and rock in the foundation pit; pouring nearly 110,000 m3 of concrete with about 7,500 tons of steel reinforcement; manufacturing and assembling 55,000 tons of steel poles; pulling and laying more than 6,000 km of cables of all kinds (26 conductors, lightning protection wires and optical cables).
Despite many difficulties, EVN has had many solutions in management and supervision, together with contractors, making efforts to overcome difficulties to complete the project ahead of schedule.
In addition, the Lao Cai 500kV Transformer Station Phase 2 project with a total investment of more than VND 1,564 billion has also been completed to synchronize with the Lao Cai - Vinh Yen 500kV Transmission Line project.
The Lao Cai - Vinh Yen 500kV Transmission Line Project is a national key project, with a total investment of more than VND 7,410 billion. The 500kV double-circuit transmission line has a total length of 229.5km, with a total of 468 pole foundation locations. The project passes through the territory of 2 provinces including Lao Cai and Phu Tho (formerly 4 provinces including Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Phu Tho and Vinh Phuc), with the starting point being the Lao Cai 500kV station and the ending point being the Vinh Yen 500kV station.
