Located southeast of Hai Phong city, Cat Hai district boasts the famous Cat Ba archipelago and Lan Ha Bay. The Cat Ba archipelago covers an area of nearly 300 km² , with 366 islands of varying sizes, and is home to Cat Ba National Park with its incredibly rich flora and fauna.
The Cat Ba archipelago and Lan Ha Bay have repeatedly received prestigious national and international accolades.

In 2003, the Prime Minister recognized the Cat Ba sea area as a marine protected area of Vietnam.
In 2004, the Cat Ba archipelago was recognized by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve.
In 2013, it was recognized as a Special National Monument by the Prime Minister.
In 2020, Lan Ha Bay in Cat Hai district became a member of the Association of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World.
On September 16, 2023, the Cat Ba archipelago, along with Ha Long Bay, was recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site, making it the first inter-provincial/city World Natural Heritage Site in Vietnam.

Few places in Vietnam boast such a stunning collection of pristine islands and sea caves as Cat Ba. The limestone mountain ranges of Cat Ba form winding coastlines, creating numerous beaches of varying sizes with fine white sand and crystal-clear waters.
Furthermore, Cat Ba National Park, covering 15,200 hectares, boasts an incredibly rich flora and fauna, preserving rare genetic resources listed in the world's Red Book, most notably the Cat Ba langur and the Juniper tree. The Cat Ba Archipelago Biosphere Reserve has been recognized as the world's first "Learning Laboratory for Sustainable Development" for its biodiversity values.

Located just 90 minutes from Hanoi via the Hanoi-Hai Phong expressway, Cat Ba has recently developed unique, distinctive, and high-quality tourism products that attract visitors. It is on a path to renewing its image, enhancing its status, and improving its competitiveness as a tourist destination.
