British troops in Ukraine will become a target for Russia

The above comment was made by Mr. Medvedev on Telegram on October 1 after British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps announced the deployment of British soldiers to Kiev to train the Ukrainian army.

According to Mr. Medvedev, not only British soldiers, but also weapons production facilities that Germany plans to build in Ukraine will become legal targets of the Russian army.

Mr. Medvedev said that recent moves by the West are pushing the world closer to World War III.

“This will make British military advisers in Ukraine a target for the Russian military. They must understand that we always have a way to deal with this problem,” Mr. Medvedev stressed.

Mr Medvedev also later mentioned Germany's desire to supply Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles capable of striking Russian territory and its attempts to impose new sanctions on the Russian military.

"They say this is in accordance with international law. In that case, an attack on German factories where these missiles are produced would also be in full compliance with international law," Medvedev said.

Earlier, on September 30, the new British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps told the Telegraph that discussions were underway about expanding the UK-led training program for the Ukrainian military and that London would likely deploy military advisers to Ukraine. In addition, the UK could support the Ukrainian navy in the Black Sea.

During a trip to Kiev earlier this week, Secretary of State Shapps said he felt it would be more effective to deploy military support in Ukraine than to do so in the UK. In addition to training Ukrainian soldiers, London intends to manufacture weapons in Kiev through investment from defence giant BAE Systems.

In talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Mr Shapps also said the British navy could play a role in “protecting commercial vessels” in the Black Sea.

The British Army has been conducting a formal operation to train and equip the Ukrainian military since 2015, which was then transferred to the UK and several other NATO countries after the conflict broke out.

In addition to military advisers, the British military also deployed marines to conduct a number of "covert operations" in Ukraine last year, but London has never admitted to having any significant military presence in Ukraine.

The public deployment of British troops to Ukraine would be another escalation, after London became the first NATO country to supply Kiev with depleted uranium munitions as well as long-range cruise missiles.
