The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reports that the number of dengue fever cases in the Americas has increased by nearly 50% in the past three weeks, reaching 5.2 million cases since the beginning of 2024, including more than 1,800 deaths.
PAHO Director Jarbas Barbosa emphasized that dengue fever continues to spread rapidly in South America, particularly in Brazil and Argentina. However, the head of PAHO believes that the recent drop in temperatures in South American countries will help stabilize the dengue infection situation in the region.
Conversely, with countries in the Northern Hemisphere about to enter summer, PAHO notes that hot weather creates favorable conditions for mosquitoes to breed more, in a context where vaccination programs remain ineffective in combating dengue fever outbreaks.
