On July 16th, in New York, USA, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held an open ministerial-level debate on the theme "Multilateral Cooperation for a More Just, Democratic and Sustainable International Order".
The session was chaired by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov (the country holding the Security Council presidency in July 2024) and attended by representatives from more than 50 UN member states.
At the meeting, most countries emphasized the need to strengthen multilateral cooperation to address the multifaceted and complex global challenges that no single nation can solve alone; they also stressed that international law and the UN Charter are the solid foundation for building a just, democratic, and sustainable world order.
Speaking at the discussion session, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN, emphasized that adherence to UN law and the UN Charter, especially the principles of respect for the sovereignty, political independence, and territorial integrity of states, refraining from the use and threat of force, and peacefully resolving disputes, is crucial for maintaining effective multilateral cooperation.
Furthermore, multilateral cooperation must place people at the center, respecting and striving to realize their legitimate aspirations to live in peace, prosperity, and a progressive society. In addition, strong reforms are needed to enhance the voice and representation of developing countries in multilateral institutions that significantly impact global security, economic, and social situations.
Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang affirmed that Vietnam strongly supports multilateralism and has made every effort to strengthen the multilateral system at the regional and global levels through active participation and promotion of initiatives within the framework of regional and international organizations of which Vietnam is a member, especially ASEAN and the UN.
Vietnam has made significant contributions to fulfilling common commitments in the fields of peace, security, sustainable development, and promoting human rights, primarily for the benefit of its people, in order to jointly promote a more peaceful, prosperous, and just world.
