Nguyen Viet Ha, a young man from Zone 19, Bac Son commune, Tam Nong district, has become a shining example of entrepreneurial spirit and overcoming difficulties in agriculture after Typhoon Yagi.
From the arduous first steps with Thai banana cultivation, Mr. Ha has now developed a commercial farm raising fighting roosters and wild boars. In 2018, driven by passion and a desire to escape poverty, Mr. Nguyen Viet Ha decided to venture into Thai banana cultivation. As an active member of the Bac Son Commune Farmers' Association, with the enthusiastic support of the association, Mr. Ha was able to access loan capital from the Social Policy Bank – an opportunity to start a business in agriculture.
With initial loans and available capital, Mr. Ha embarked on building a model for growing Thai bananas. In the early years, banana production only brought in 200-300 million VND per year. However, thanks to perseverance and continuous learning, his banana farming model has developed strongly. By 2023, after deducting expenses, labor costs, and other investments, revenue from banana cultivation reached 500 million VND per year.
Mr. Ha's banana farming model not only provides a stable income for his family but also creates jobs for two full-time local workers and many seasonal workers.
Mr. Nguyen Viet Ha takes care of his family's purebred wild boar herd.
In particular, throughout his career, he has always maintained a spirit of learning and proactively sought new solutions to optimize production. Mr. Ha said: “Starting my business from scratch, despite the hardships, I refused to give up. I traveled everywhere to research banana varieties, requested fertilizers, and personally cared for the banana plantation under all kinds of harsh weather conditions.”
Starting a business in agriculture is not easy, but with perseverance, learning, and finding the right path, there is a chance of success. In addition, access to capital and support from organizations like the Farmers' Association is also crucial to help alleviate the burden of starting a business.”
However, starting a business is a very arduous journey, requiring passion, perseverance, and unwavering determination. In August 2024, all 11 hectares of land planted with banana trees, equivalent to more than 30,000 trees, belonging to Mr. Ha were completely destroyed and flattened after Typhoon Yagi (Typhoon No. 3) passed through. Undeterred, after some time, Mr. Ha quickly decided to shift his economic focus to a new livestock farming model.
In October 2024, Mr. Ha leased a 1.1-hectare farm to develop a commercial fighting chicken and wild boar farming model. Currently, his farm has 80 wild boars and over 300 fighting chickens, with a total farm area of 3,600 square meters. Despite facing difficulties, Mr. Ha remains determined to maintain and develop agriculture, especially banana cultivation. He plans to replant 2,000 banana trees on the remaining land of the farm early next year.
“Bananas are a familiar specialty fruit of Northern Vietnam. Banana trees bring high economic value and can be harvested year-round. Despite setbacks due to natural disasters, I still believe in the potential and benefits of this crop in agricultural production,” said Mr. Ha.
Mr. Ha's entrepreneurial story is not just a personal journey of overcoming difficulties, but also a testament to the innovative thinking of young farmers in developing the rural economy. Farming is not easy, with many challenges, risks, and unpredictable natural disasters. However, he always maintained his faith in his work and continued to learn to do better.
Nguyen Viet Ha's entrepreneurial journey is a clear example of overcoming adversity.
Ms. Lam Phuong Yen, Chairwoman of the Bac Son Commune Farmers' Association, said: "Mr. Nguyen Viet Ha is a shining example of entrepreneurial spirit and overcoming poverty in the movement of farmers competing in excellent production and business. His diligence, hard work, and desire to get rich have helped him overcome difficulties and become one of the outstanding members of the Commune Farmers' Association."
Thanks to the efforts of the local government and the people, especially exemplary individuals like Mr. Nguyen Viet Ha, the poverty rate in Bac Son commune in 2024 decreased by 0.37%, reaching 185% of the plan, while the near-poverty rate decreased by 0.55%, reaching 183.3% of the plan. This success further highlights the important role of agriculture in improving the lives of the people.
These figures are not only the result of policies supporting farmers but also a testament to the tireless efforts of farmers like Mr. Nguyen Viet Ha, who have overcome difficulties to achieve success. The movement "Farmers competing in excellent production and business, uniting to help each other get rich and sustainably reduce poverty" is being widely replicated and strongly developed in Bac Son commune, and Mr. Nguyen Viet Ha is one of the shining examples in this movement.
Nguyen Viet Ha's entrepreneurial journey is a clear testament to the resilience and relentless efforts of rural youth in developing agricultural economics. From an ordinary farmer, he has become a powerful source of inspiration for the community, affirming that agriculture is the path to prosperity and contributing to sustainable poverty reduction in society.
