Regarding the activities of the United Nations, the organization currently has 193 member states. The United Nations is a mechanism for member states to promote common ground, jointly address issues, and make common decisions on global issues such as peace and security, climate change, and sustainable development. The General Assembly is the most representative and inclusive policy-making body of the United Nations, comprising all 193 member states equally, regardless of size, with each member state having one vote. Every September, heads of state and leaders of UN member states gather at the organization's headquarters in New York (USA) to begin the General Debate of the annual session of the UN General Assembly. Vietnam officially joined the United Nations in September 1977. For over 40 years, the Vietnam-United Nations cooperation has contributed to protecting and promoting Vietnam's national interests, especially maintaining and strengthening a peaceful, secure, and favorable environment for national development. This relationship has also fostered deeper international integration and contributed to enhancing Vietnam's position and image internationally; deepening Vietnam's relations with other countries and partners, and securing important resources for national development. Vietnam has proactively and increasingly made substantial contributions to the activities of the United Nations, participating in discussions and the adoption of many important UN resolutions and declarations on development cooperation, combating the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, counter-terrorism, and ensuring human rights. Vietnam has also actively promoted initiatives to reform the United Nations, and is particularly recognized as one of the leading countries in implementing the UN's "Delivering as One" initiative to increase the effectiveness of the UN at the national level. With its contributions, Vietnam has been elected to many important positions and bodies within the United Nations and has left a significant mark on these bodies, such as the UN Security Council, the UN Human Rights Council, and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). After completing diplomatic events in the US, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will pay an official visit to Brazil, hold talks with President Lula da Silva, meet with leaders of the Brazilian National Congress, and participate in several other important activities.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Vietnam received over 61.7 million doses of vaccine through the COVAX program and medical supplies worth US$45 million from United Nations organizations. Vietnam also contributed US$50,000 to the UN Covid-19 Response Fund, US$1 million to COVAX, and is preparing to make an additional voluntary contribution of US$500,000 to COVAX. In the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Vietnam also contributed US$500,000 to humanitarian relief efforts to support people affected by the fighting in Ukraine.
