US President Donald Trump emphasized that trade tensions with Mexico and Canada will become a driving force for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted in three North American countries.
On March 7, President Trump held a press conference in the Oval Office at the White House alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Reporters questioned whether current trade tensions between the US and Canada and Mexico would impact the 2026 World Cup, AFP reported.
“Tense is a good thing. I think it makes things more interesting,” Trump said. The US President also signed an executive order establishing a task force on the 2026 World Cup, headed personally by Trump. This group will assist in planning for the tournament, which Trump described as “the biggest sporting event in history.”

The 2026 World Cup will take place next summer in North America. Currently, conflicts exist among the three co-hosting countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico, following President Trump's imposition of tariffs on Mexico and Canada. The two neighboring countries have also announced they will take retaliatory measures.
Also speaking at a press conference on March 7, FIFA President Infantino said that the 2026 World Cup, along with the Club World Cup to be held in the US this summer, is estimated to attract 10 million visitors, create 200,000 jobs, and generate $40 billion in revenue for the US. “Moreover, we will bring joy and happiness to the whole world, and that is certainly invaluable,” NBC News quoted Infantino as saying.
The trade war erupted when Trump officially imposed tariffs on Canada, China, and Mexico.
Meanwhile, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was asked about the capacity to ensure security for a large-scale event like the World Cup, especially after the chaos at last year's Copa America final in Florida. Noem said she would operate an "incident command center" in the host cities and work with federal agencies, local law enforcement, and international partners to ensure the tournament runs smoothly.
