The Hai Duong Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine collected 16 blood samples from pigs raised by three households in Cam Hoang commune (Cam Giang district) to check the levels of protective antibodies after vaccination. The results showed that 100% of the samples contained antibodies against African swine fever, with antibody levels ranging from 66.98% to 97.99%, ensuring immunity (antibody levels below 40% do not guarantee immunity). This will serve as a basis for Hai Duong to consider and evaluate large-scale vaccination against African swine fever in the future.
Earlier, in early July, the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine, in coordination with the Cam Giang District Agricultural Services Center, vaccinated pigs against African swine fever at three small-scale farming households. The pigs are healthy, developing normally, and no abnormal symptoms related to the vaccine have been detected since vaccination. Twenty-eight days after vaccination, blood samples were taken and sent for testing at the Central Veterinary Diagnostic Center.
The vaccine administered is from AVAC Vietnam Joint Stock Company. This vaccine is used for fattening pigs from 4 weeks of age and older, with a single dose, and provides protection for at least 5 months.
In the coming period, the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine will continue to implement the evaluation of African swine fever vaccination for fattening pigs. At the same time, they will closely monitor and supervise the fattening pig herds after vaccination, taking samples for testing to check the levels of protective antibodies after vaccination.
In 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development had to request a halt to the African swine fever vaccination program in 31 provinces and cities (where there are large pig herds) due to pigs dying after receiving the vaccine.
However, given the complex developments of the epidemic, on July 24th, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development sent a document to the People's Committees of provinces and centrally-administered cities regarding the use of African swine fever vaccines. Accordingly, the People's Committees of provinces and centrally-administered cities, based on the disease situation, directed specialized agencies to advise on the use of vaccines in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions to prevent and control the disease in their localities; and organized sample collection for monitoring and evaluation after vaccination. Localities are required to report the results of vaccine use (if any), as well as promptly report any difficulties or obstacles to the Ministry for coordination and resolution.
