The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) announced today (November 15) that during the implementation of component 3 of the Long Thanh airport project, the unit saved nearly 4,000 billion VND, including contingency and bidding costs.

With these savings, ACV proposes investing in an additional runway at Long Thanh Airport during Phase 1.

According to ACV, the construction of the second runway is necessary to meet the growing air transport demand in the southern region.

Explaining this proposal, ACV stated that building a second runway from the outset would ensure continuous operation, avoiding disruptions that would arise later if additional runways were needed. Furthermore, having an extra runway would allow Long Thanh Airport to support Tan Son Nhat Airport in case of emergencies. With projected air transport demand in Ho Chi Minh City and surrounding provinces reaching approximately 71 million passengers by 2030, Long Thanh Airport having only one runway poses significant risks such as overcrowding, delays, and even flight cancellations in the event of an incident.

Furthermore, the construction of the second runway at Long Thanh Airport aims to ensure synchronized operations, avoiding disruptions caused by infrastructure and technical control system connections, thereby improving efficiency and preventing waste.

Construction continues through the night at the Long Thanh airport mega-project.
