VOV.VN – Today, at the ASEAN Secretariat headquarters in Jakarta, Indonesia, ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn held a press conference to announce the results of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits recently held in Laos.
Secretary-General Kao Kim Hun stated that the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits achieved significant results with the adoption of 91 documents, demonstrating the efforts of ASEAN member states and partners during nearly a year of active work.
Among the key outcomes were the ASEAN leaders' commitment to enhancing connectivity, the digital economy, and climate resilience. ASEAN leaders also stressed ASEAN's central role in regional diplomacy and the importance of clean energy, digitalization, and people-to-people connectivity.
Specific initiatives include the ASEAN-China Action Plan 2026-2030, the ASEAN-India Digital Cooperation Programme, and negotiations on the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement. The 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits also discussed international and regional issues of significant impact, including the situation in Myanmar and the issue of peace in the South China Sea.
Regarding the Myanmar issue, the ASEAN Secretary-General stated: “ASEAN leaders discussed finding the best solutions to address the situation in Myanmar; emphasizing the importance of promoting the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus Plan, which remains the primary reference for addressing Myanmar’s political issues. ASEAN leaders also stressed the need to promote support for all affected people in Myanmar, including regional efforts with the support of international partners and non-governmental organizations.”
Regarding the South China Sea issue, the ASEAN Secretary-General stated that the leaders expressed concern about the escalating tensions in the South China Sea, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution based on international law.
In the current global and regional context, Secretary-General Kao Kim Hun stated that ASEAN leaders have emphasized the importance of ASEAN unity and solidarity. ASEAN needs to continue playing a leading role in managing relations with major powers, ensuring relations with external partners are consistent with ASEAN principles, while affirming ASEAN's central role in shaping regional and global issues. ASEAN leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Timor-Leste's integration into ASEAN, noting progress in implementing the accession roadmap.
