Ho Chi Minh City issues new regulations on exams for gifted students in grades 9 and 12

Accordingly, the 2024-2025 school year will be the first year that 9th and 12th grade students will participate in the city-level excellent student competition based on the 2018 general education program.

Therefore, the gifted student competition will also be oriented towards assessing students' thinking skills and practical application abilities.

The 9th grade gifted student competition includes many new subjects.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training announced that this year's 9th-grade gifted student exam will include the following subjects: Literature, History and Geography, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Informatics, English, French, Chinese, Japanese, Technology (Industrial Orientation), and Technology ( Agricultural Orientation).

The natural science subject has two parts: a compulsory part (30% of the total score): general knowledge; and an elective part (70% of the total score): Students can choose one of the following three content areas:

+ Matter and its transformations; Earth and the sky.

Energy and transformation; Earth and the sky.

+ Living things; Earth and the sky.

For history and geography: Students can choose one of two sub-disciplines: history or geography.

For Computer Science: The exam will involve computer programming; for Foreign Languages, there will be a listening comprehension section. Exam duration: 120 minutes.

Eligible participants are students currently in grade 9 at junior high schools during the 2024-2025 school year who have achieved a "good" or higher academic and behavioral record in the first semester and are members of the gifted student team of their respective participating schools.

According to the department, the percentage of students winning prizes should not exceed 60% of the total number of participating students (with first prize winners not exceeding 5% of the total number of prize winners). The department only considers first, second, and third prizes if students achieve a score of 10 points or higher.

New regulations for the 12th grade gifted student exam.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training stipulates that the 12th-grade gifted student exam will include the following subjects:
Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, Literature, History, Geography, Economics and Law Education, English, French, Japanese, Chinese (foreign languages ​​include a listening comprehension section). Exam duration: 120 minutes.

Students currently in 12th grade during the 2024-2025 school year, with academic and behavioral performance rated as "good" or higher in the first semester, are eligible to participate. However, students in the city's national team for the national excellent student competition are not eligible to participate.

In this, all 12th-grade students in specialized classes are required to participate.

The Department only awards individual prizes (first, second, and third place) for each subject. Specifically: The percentage of students winning prizes must not exceed 60% of the total number of participating students (with first-place winners not exceeding 5% of the total number of winners), and the minimum score for ranking is 10 points.
