After several days of heavy rain caused by Typhoon No. 6, over 3 hectares of pepper plants belonging to local residents in Gio An commune, Gio Linh district, Quang Tri province, have been flooded and damaged. In particular, the continuous appearance of numerous springs in the pepper gardens has significantly affected the root systems, threatening the area, yield, and quality of this crop in the coming period, causing great concern among pepper growers.

According to Le Phuoc Hieu, Vice Chairman of the Gio An Commune People's Committee, the recent heavy rains have caused many springs to erupt and overflow onto the ground, flooding some pepper-growing areas in the commune.

Specifically, out of a total of over 80 hectares of pepper plantations in the commune, more than 3 hectares have been flooded, and some pepper gardens have shown signs of yellowing and leaf drop, posing a significant economic risk to the people. The most recent occurrence of groundwater seepage in Gio An commune was during the historic floods of 2020, which completely destroyed nearly 20 hectares of pepper plants and affected over 60 hectares, requiring a long time to recover.

And now, with the increasing number of groundwater seepage points in people's gardens, coupled with the possibility of continued heavy rainfall in the coming days, not only pepper plants but also many areas of crops and industrial plants belonging to the people are at risk of being affected.

In light of this situation, the Gio An Commune People's Committee is coordinating with the Gio Linh District Plant Cultivation and Protection Station to guide residents on measures to protect pepper plants and other crops during the rainy and stormy season.

This includes instructing people to quickly dig drainage ditches around their gardens if they are flooded to drain water quickly; and to remove water-retaining basins around the base of pepper plants to prevent waterlogging. At the same time, they will continue to propose support for Tricoderma biological products and other bio-based pesticides to prevent diseases in pepper plants in the future.
