Early in the morning of the second day of the Lunar New Year (February 11th), a large number of locals and tourists gathered in Phu Hoi village, Trieu An commune, Trieu Phong district, to watch the dragon boat race. Mr. Nguyen Quang Sang, head of Phu Hoi village, said that the 2024 Dragon Boat Race is a traditional sporting event aimed at creating a recreational activity on the waterways of the homeland, enhancing the spiritual life of the people and tourists. It also serves as a prayer for favorable weather conditions to facilitate fishing and aquaculture for the local people.

The dragon boat festival was organized on a large scale and with high quality. The village made a significant investment by collaborating with a professional event organizer to livestream the event on social media platforms, showcasing and promoting the traditional beauty of the homeland while also meeting the needs of people from all over.

Nearly 100 athletes from six teams in Phu Hoi, Ha Tay, and An Xuan villages participated in the festival, competing in the 3km race, including the main category, the preliminary category, and the regional category. The festival was lively and exciting, with the cheers and encouragement of the people creating a joyful sporting atmosphere during the traditional Lunar New Year.

From the 4th day of the Lunar New Year (February 13th), numerous sports competitions were held throughout the province, creating a colorful spring sports scene. According to Nguyen Xuan Hoan, Director of the Culture, Information and Sports Center of Gio Linh district, it has become a tradition for the center to organize Table Tennis and Chess tournaments on the 4th day of the Lunar New Year. This year, 70 athletes participated in the competition. The Culture, Information and Sports Center has made thorough preparations to maintain and promote the tournament's reputation, while also creating a good start for the district's sports sector towards a more successful new year.

At the commune, town, and even neighborhood and village levels, many sports activities took place enthusiastically in early spring of the Year of the Dragon, such as: Gio Linh town organizing a tug-of-war competition; Trung Hai commune organizing a traditional boat race; Gio Quang commune organizing a volleyball tournament... and many football tournaments organized by village-level youth unions. In addition, many traditional sports and folk games were given attention and organized during festivals, such as: Nhi Trung village (Gio Hai commune) organizing a traditional swing festival and tug-of-war, stick pushing, and volleyball; An My village (Gio My commune) organizing a traditional spring festival...

The early spring weather was ideal for organizing sports tournaments in Dong Ha City. From early morning on the 4th day of Tet (Lunar New Year), many residents of Dong Giang ward happily came to watch the traditional boat race on Hoi Song. This year's tournament was organized on a large scale and with high quality, bringing together 85 athletes from 7 teams in Dong Giang ward. The tournament created many exciting and impressive chases on the green Hoi Song race course; the athletes stood side by side amidst the encouragement and cheers of the people.

As part of the sports activities celebrating the Party and the Lunar New Year of the Dragon - 2024, on the morning of the 4th day of Tet, Dai Ang neighborhood, Dong Luong ward, Dong Ha city organized a traditional football tournament to celebrate the beginning of spring 2024, bringing together more than 80 players from 6 teams. These are beautiful cultural and sporting traditions that have been preserved for many years every time Tet comes around.

The mass sports movement got off to a smooth start.

According to reporters' observations, since the fourth day of the Lunar New Year, grassroots sports activities have been taking place simultaneously and enthusiastically across the country, from districts, towns, and cities down to villages and neighborhoods. With the involvement of Party committees, government agencies, businesses, and the people, from urban to rural areas, from mountainous regions to coastal and island areas, numerous football, volleyball, traditional boat racing, traditional wrestling, tug-of-war, stick pushing, and other folk games have been held with great enthusiasm. These activities attract thousands of people to watch, cheer, and compete.

According to Phan Van Hoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism , ahead of the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin - 2024, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has implemented plans to guide and support localities and units in organizing sports activities to celebrate the Party and the spring.

Sports activities in early spring 2024 were vibrant and widespread, notably characterized by professionalism in organization and management; improved scale and quality of amateur tournaments; investment in enhancing the image quality of tournaments through livestreaming and commentary; and effective implementation of the socialization of physical education and sports, especially the mobilization of resources from the people to support the mass sports movement.

Leaders of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism directly visited, encouraged, and presented gifts to several localities organizing traditional boat races and volleyball tournaments at the beginning of the year. With many rich and diverse sports activities organized in the early days of the Year of the Dragon, especially at the grassroots level, this brings positive signals for the development of mass sports movements in the coming time.
