US and South Korean military officials have confirmed that the MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) crashed while "performing a routine mission" on the morning of November 24 (local time).
A US Air Force UAV crashed near Maldo-ri Island, off Gunsan City, about 180 km from Seoul, South Korea.

The US 8th Fighter Wing based at Kunsan Air Base in Gunsan said the UAV "had an accident" during a mission at about 4:35 a.m.
"There were no casualties or property damage related to this incident and the incident is currently under investigation," the 8th Fighter Squadron said in a statement.
US and South Korean forces are conducting a search and salvage operation for the device, which is considered important to collect technical data and avoid leaving debris that could affect maritime activities in the area.
The incident occurred after the US military established a reconnaissance unit operating the MQ-9 Reaper UAV at Kunsan base in September. Previously, the US had only deployed this drone on a rotational basis in South Korea.
The US Air Force said the MQ-9 Reaper UAV is capable of performing intelligence gathering, coordination and reconnaissance missions, with a range of about 1,850 km.
According to many press sources, each MQ-9 Reaper UAV costs about 30 million USD.
