Uong Bi: Opening of the Thanh Y Dao Cultural Space Exhibition House

On the afternoon of August 22, at the Khe Su II Village Cultural House (Thuong Yen Cong Commune), the People's Committee of Uong Bi City held the Opening Ceremony of the Dao Thanh Y Cultural Space Exhibition House and launched the community tourism model in Khe Su II Village.

Thuong Yen Cong is a mountainous commune of Uong Bi City, bordering Son Dong District ( Bac Giang Province). The commune has more than 6,000 people living in 8 villages and 18 hamlets. Although the area is small, Thuong Yen Cong has 9 ethnic groups living together, of which the Dao ethnic group accounts for the largest number with 58%, especially in Khe Su II village, where 100% are Dao Thanh Y ethnic people.

In order to preserve and promote the value of culture, develop community tourism in the locality, and turn this place into one of the centers for preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Dao Thanh Y people, in the fourth quarter of 2023, Uong Bi City decided to invest in building a Dao Thanh Y Cultural Space Exhibition House in Thuong Yen Cong Commune. The total investment cost is 800 million VND.

After 8 months of construction, the project has been officially completed. The Exhibition House will recreate 5 cultural spaces of the Dao Thanh Y people, with bilingual captions (Vietnamese - English), including: Space to display male and female costumes of the Dao Thanh Y people; Space to introduce the Dao Thanh Y ethnic ordination ceremony (a cluster of models simulated by statues at a scale of 1:1 and images and explanations of the ordination ceremony); Re-enactment of a model of a Dao Thanh Y rammed earth house (designed to simulate); space to display the kitchen corner of the Dao Thanh Y people; Space to display some images and artifacts associated with the life, activities and culture of the Dao Thanh Y people.

The bronze pot is over 120 years old and the bronze tray is 100 years old and was donated by the people in the commune to the Exhibition House.

Among them, there are precious and rare artifacts such as: A set of Buddha paintings (ancient) over 100 years old of Mr. Dang Van Son's family (a shaman, Khe Su II village, a prestigious person in Thuong Yen Cong commune); a bronze pot over 120 years old of Mr. Ly Duc Hai's family (Dong Chanh village); a 100-year-old bronze tray of Mr. Truong Van Thien's family (Tap Doan village); a loom over 75 years old of Mrs. Truong Thi Bich's family (Khe Su II village); and many other precious and rare artifacts donated by people in the commune.

Immediately after the launching ceremony, the Thanh Y Dao Cultural Space Exhibition House will be handed over to the People's Committee of Thuong Yen Cong Commune for management. During the management and operation of the Exhibition House, the Department of Culture and Information together with the Quang Ninh Museum will continue to accompany and support the commune and Khe Su II village to do better in management and exploitation; contributing to the preservation and promotion of the cultural values of the Thanh Y Dao people, associated with the development of local community tourism in particular and contributing to the development of sustainable tourism in Uong Bi City in general in the coming years.

The community tourism model in Khe Su II village is called the Dao Thanh Y Ethnic Community Cooperative Group, invested by Ms. Truong Thi Thanh Huong on an area of about 300m2 with a cost of more than 1 billion VND and put into operation from February 2024. The model has many services such as cuisine, foot bath, herbal bath of the Dao Thanh Y people and serves the culinary needs of tourists with dishes made from local ingredients, processed in the unique way of the Dao people. The model currently employs 4 regular workers and some seasonal workers; at the same time, there is the participation of local people in cultural, artistic and community sports activities according to the needs of tourists.

The Thanh Y Dao Cultural Space Exhibition House and the community tourism model in Khe Su II Village are two new tourism products out of a total of 62 new tourism products of the whole province that will be put into operation and welcome tourists in 2024. Thereby creating unique and diverse tourist destinations in the sightseeing and tourism route of the Yen Tu relic and scenic complex; contributing to the completion of the goal of welcoming 100,000 international visitors out of a total of 3.2 million visitors in 2024 of Uong Bi City.
