Despite the continuous advancements in modern medicine, scientists have yet to find a definitive cure for cancer. Oncologists at Ca Mau General Hospital explain that cancer is not a single disease, but rather a combination of over 200 different diseases, each attacking human cells in its own way. Some types develop extremely rapidly, while others develop silently for years, and importantly, there is no single miracle pill that can treat them all.
Ms. D.TMT (Do Thi Minh Trang), 63 years old, residing in Hamlet 5, Tan Thanh Ward, has stage 3 ovarian cancer that has metastasized. She is receiving home-based healthcare support from staff at the Tan Thanh Ward Health Station.
More dangerously, cancer originates from within the patient's own body; unlike some other infectious diseases which are usually contracted, invaded, and developed from the outside by viruses or bacteria entering the human body.
Speaking about cancer, Dr. Ngo Minh Phuoc, Head of the Department of Non-Communicable Disease Prevention and Control at the Ca Mau Provincial Center for Disease Control, said: “Cancer actually originates from normal cells in the human body. However, for some reason, they mutate and develop uncontrollably. But the immune cells in the human body cannot recognize this abnormality. Therefore, it is very difficult to destroy these dangerous malignant cells.”
Ms. NTQ, 39 years old, residing in Tan Thanh Ward, has stage 3 thyroid cancer. Her health is currently declining, and in addition to her monthly treatment at the Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital, she still relies on medical support from the ward's health officials.
Scientific studies show that cancer doesn't appear suddenly; it develops silently over many years and often presents with symptoms similar to other common illnesses. Therefore, diagnosis based solely on clinical examination or superficial tests is difficult to detect in its early stages. Furthermore, cancer cells are highly adaptable to treatments, always finding ways to resist medication. If radiation therapy is used, they can find loopholes to bypass protected cells and attack other tissues.
Generally speaking, cancer always finds ways to mutate its genes to learn how to survive. Therefore, when one type of medication is no longer effective, another type must be used, and it's certainly not always possible to deal with them in time.
More seriously, cancer can recur at any time. Therefore, many patients who have undergone surgery or successful treatment experience a recurrence of cancerous cells, often even more aggressively, just a few years later. In reality, cancer can remain dormant, waiting until the body's immune system weakens before it can develop and attack the body's defenses; by then, it's often too late.
Mrs. TTP, 78 years old, residing in Tan Thanh ward, suffers from liver cancer and comes from a disadvantaged family. She is currently receiving treatment at Hoa Hao Hospital. She regularly receives visits from local officials and ward health workers for health check-ups and encouragement to help her focus on her treatment.
Ms. NTL, born in 1972, residing in Hamlet 1, An Xuyen Ward, shared her experience with cervical cancer: “Previously, I often experienced chest pain, dull pain in the lower abdomen, and irregular menstrual cycles. I thought it was just normal pain due to irregular menstruation. A few months ago, when I went to Cho Ray Hospital for examination, the doctors informed me that I had cervical cancer and that it had metastasized to the breast.”
Cancer is a dangerous disease, difficult to treat, and can return at any time. But if detected early, the chance of treatment always exists. Don't wait until obvious symptoms appear before seeing a doctor. Early screening and early treatment are the best "shields" for life.
