VIB and the strategy of "Leading the card trend": From vision to pioneering position

(Dan Tri) - Vietnam International Bank (VIB) has just reached the milestone of 1 million credit cards, affirming the achievements of the strategy "Leading the card trend" which has been persistently implemented for over 7 years.

Before 2019, when credit cards were still not popular with Vietnamese users, the card market mainly operated according to the traditional model. Products often had complicated mechanisms, many types of fees, and the user experience was not optimized. Realizing the strong development trend of cashless payments, along with a great opportunity to create a breakthrough in the market,VIB implemented the conversion of the credit card segment since the end of 2018, laying the foundation for the strategy "Leading the card trend".

VIB's credit card transformation journey began with a strategic repositioning, shifting the focus from issuing conventional cards to creating a diverse, personalized card ecosystem that is deeply integrated into users' digital lives. This strategy is built on three main pillars: Technology - Experience - Benefits.

Stay ahead with technological breakthroughs

VIB's strategy of "Leading the card trend" is closely linked to the bank's digital transformation journey. Identifying technology as a key lever, VIB has invested in and applied advanced technology, creating the first impressions on the market.

VIB applied Big Data and AI to the card approval process since 2020. This technology allows for automatic and accurate analysis and evaluation of customer profiles, shortening the card opening time from several days to just 15-30 minutes, allowing users to apply for a credit card right on their computer or phone without proof of income or going to a branch.

As the first bank to launch a line of cards that allows users to choose the Super Card feature, VIB empowers cardholders to design their own card: from choosing the cashback field, statement date, minimum payment rate to choosing the last 5 digits of the card as desired.

VIB will also soon use information from the electronic identification and authentication system that citizens agree to share to open credit cards online on the VNeID application, from October 17, 2024, helping users to register and open credit cards quickly and conveniently, while ensuring information security for both people and banking operations.

The bank also applies augmented reality (AR) technology to create a “talking card” and GenAI to personalize card design, providing experiences beyond the usual payment function.

Pioneering experience from customer understanding

VIB has researched user behavior and preferences to build a diverse card collection, meeting from basic needs to high-end experiences through 10 specialized credit card lines, meeting the right and sufficient spending needs when shopping (Cash Back, Super Card, Online Plus 2in1), traveling (Travel Élite, Premier Boundless), family and education (Family Link, Ivy Card), and business credit (Business Card).

In terms of personalization, customers can design their own card features with Super Card, proactively transfer between card limit and cash loan limit of up to 1 billion VND with flexible loan solution Super Cash, or proactively manage card transactions with Super Pay.

Based on superior technology, VIB focuses on creating a seamless and simple customer experience journey. The MyVIB digital banking application becomes the center of the ecosystem, helping customers easily manage all aspects of the card: from card activation, card locking/unlocking, card statement viewing, debt payment, 0% interest installment registration, to exchanging accumulated reward points for cash, vouchers (gift certificates) or annual fees.

Applying AR technology helps VIB create "talking cards".

Not only stopping at features, VIB also creates unique experiences when applying augmented reality (AR) technology to credit cards, turning the physical card into a "talking card", providing promotional information in an intuitive and vivid way. AI application helps customers design their own card with their own appearance and color.

Instead of applying general policies to all customers, VIB implements personalized incentives according to spending needs, bringing optimal benefits to each customer segment.

1 million cards - 1 million journeys with customers

Sharing about the 1 million card milestone, Ms. Tuong Nguyen, Deputy General Director of VIB, said: “Reaching the 1 million card milestone is an important milestone not only for VIB. The significance of this milestone lies not only on the growth charts, but also in the daily lives of each customer. It is millions of stories, millions of memorable journeys and experiences of customers”.

For VIB, the 1 million card milestone is not only a starting point, but also an affirmation of the right direction.
