SEA Games 33 is the first event to feature MMA (mixed martial arts). The Vietnamese sports delegation participated in this event with 6 athletes, of which 4 were champions and 1 was at the top of the Lion Championship candidate rankings - the largest professional MMA tournament in Vietnam at present.
In the traditional 56 kg weight class, the Vietnamese MMA team has Pham Van Nam, the first person to hold the 56 kg weight class belt of the Lion Championship. The 1992-born fighter also has high achievements in domestic jujitsu competitions.
Meanwhile, Tran Ngoc Luong will compete in the modern MMA category in the 60 kg class. He is also a martial artist with a jujitsu background, having won many gold medals at national tournaments.
The two champions in the women's weight classes of the Lion Championship are Duong Thi Thanh Binh and Nguyen Vu Quynh Hoa (both born in 2003) respectively participating in the modern MMA events of 60kg and 54kg. Nguyen Vu Quynh Hoa recently won the championship belt after defeating Lo Thi Phung.
Duong Thi Thanh Binh won national kickboxing, Muay Thai and Sanshou gold medals before winning the Lion Championship. She also won a silver medal at the Asian MMA Championship in 2023.
The two remaining fighters of the Vietnam MMA team are Le Ngoc Thu and Quang Van Minh. Le Ngoc Thu competes in the traditional 54 kg weight class. The female fighter born in 1999, who specializes in Muay Thai, is currently training at Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat's club.
Quang Van Minh, although never a champion, is currently at the top of the Lion Championship's 65kg contenders list. He will compete in the modern MMA category in the same weight class.
