US Army CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter
AFP reported on February 8, citing a statement from the US Marine Corps, that five of its members who went missing in a helicopter crash in California have been confirmed dead.
The military said the CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter crashed while flying from Creech Air Force Base in Nevada to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
"With a heavy heart and profound sadness, I share in the loss of five outstanding Marines who were on a training flight," said Major General Michael Borschulte, commander of the 3rd Marine Squadron.
The Marine Corps said that efforts to find the remains of the accident victims have been launched and the incident is under investigation.
President Joe Biden said he was heartbroken by the deaths of the servicemen. "We send our deepest condolences to their families, their squadrons, and the U.S. Marine Corps, as we mourn the loss of five of our nation's finest warriors," he shared in a statement.
There have been a series of accidents involving US military aircraft over the past year, including the crash of a V-22 Osprey off the coast of Japan in late November 2023, which killed eight pilots.
In August 2023, five U.S. servicemen were killed when a helicopter crashed into the Mediterranean Sea during a training exercise. Also in August 2023, another Osprey aircraft crash in Australia killed three U.S. Marines.
