In the latest draft of the Law on Teachers, the Ministry of Education and Training has dropped the proposal to exempt tuition fees for teachers' children.

Previously, on October 8, the National Assembly Standing Committee held a second meeting to give opinions on the draft Law on Teachers. The Ministry of Education and Training - the agency drafting the draft Law on Teachers - proposed exempting tuition fees for children of working teachers, from kindergarten to university. Based on the age of teachers and the estimated age of their children, the estimated expenditure is about 9,200 billion VND per year.

This content has attracted public attention and received many comments and objections, many of which said that this regulation is not appropriate. According to the representative of the Ministry of Education and Training, after receiving comments, the Ministry has removed this content from the draft law.

Sharing about this proposal, Mr. Vu Minh Duc, Director of the Department of Teachers and Education Management Officers, said that the regulations on regimes and policies for relatives of cadres, civil servants, and public employees are often proposed to be regulated for a number of sectors and fields with specific characteristics, for example, the health insurance regime, exemption from hospital fees for relatives of officers, non-commissioned officers, and soldiers serving in the people's armed forces have been regulated in the Law on People's Public Security and the Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army.

Mr. Duc also said that international experience shows that many countries, in addition to regulations on policies for teachers, also have preferential policies for relatives of teachers.

The Ministry of Education and Training said that with the proposed policy of exempting tuition fees for teachers' children, the Ministry is synthesizing opinions, carefully reviewing, and assessing the impact of regulations to ensure feasibility.

“With the view of building the Law on Teachers to create policies, including a number of breakthrough policies, creating conditions for teachers to develop as well as enhancing the professional status of teachers to attract talented people to the industry, the Drafting Committee has proposed a policy to support tuition fees for teachers' children and other policies to ensure social security for teachers to create conditions for teachers to have a better life, peace of mind, and attachment to the education career,” said Mr. Duc./.
