In recent years, the erosion of the Lam River banks, particularly the section near Yen Xuan Bridge (located in Long Xa commune, Hung Nguyen district, Nghe An province), has become serious.

Local authorities said the landslide area is nearly 1km long and extends about 30 meters further inland than before.

Ms. Tran Thi Thu (residing in Tan Long hamlet, Long Xa commune) shared: “In recent years, the Lam River banks have been eroding faster and more severely. Seeing the riverbanks washing away meter by meter makes everyone feel heartbroken and worried that their agricultural land will be swept into the river. We earnestly hope that the authorities will soon build embankments to prevent erosion.”

The weak layers of sandy loam soil will be washed away into the riverbed by just a few large waves or receding tides.

According to local residents, the continuous erosion of the riverbanks is caused not only by factors such as heavy rain and fluctuating water flow, but also by the impact of sand mining vessels operating in the Lam River.

Mr. Ho Van Chien, Vice Chairman of the Long Xa Commune People's Committee, said that due to the impact of floods, the erosion of the Lam River banks is becoming increasingly complex. Dozens of hectares of agricultural land belonging to local people have been swept away.

“The local authorities have implemented a plan to plant trees to act as wave barriers, planting thousands of acacia trees in landslide-prone areas, but these measures have not yielded the desired results. Subsequently, the authorities and local government proceeded to build stone embankments along the Lam River to prevent landslides. To date, the sections that have been embanked have shown clear effectiveness. However, areas that have not been embanked continue to experience landslides annually, significantly impacting the agricultural production of the people,” Mr. Chien said.
