Ca Mau strengthens links to increase shrimp export value

VTC NewsVTC News02/12/2023

Ca Mau aims to develop its shrimp industry into the largest center in the Mekong Delta and the entire country, with a suitable production organization model and the application of advanced technology to improve productivity, output, quality, and competitiveness of Ca Mau shrimp products.

Simultaneously adapting to climate change, protecting the ecological environment, and bringing benefits to the people, businesses, the provincial economy , and the entire country.

According to the National Program for Aquaculture Development Plan for the period 2021-2030 in Ca Mau province, by 2030, Ca Mau aims to achieve an aquaculture production of 570,000 tons per year.

Achieving ASC Group certification (an international certification for responsibly farmed aquaculture that minimizes negative impacts on the environment, ecosystems, and local communities, and ensures compliance with labor regulations) is the first step, laying the groundwork for Ca Mau province to set a target of having over 40,000 hectares of rice-shrimp farms achieving one of the international ASC Group certifications and other organic certifications by 2030.

Taking steps to bring Ca Mau shrimp products to most demanding markets around the world not only contributes to increasing the value of local tiger shrimp but also enhances sustainable income for farmers.

To achieve the set goals, in recent times, the agricultural sector of Ca Mau province has proactively and decisively managed and supported shrimp farmers through various solutions, such as: strengthening quality control throughout the entire value chain to create products that meet the requirements of domestic and international markets, implementing traceability, and enhancing the competitiveness of products; promoting the application of information technology in propaganda, technical support, and pond management for farmers...

According to Mr. Le Van Su, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province, in order for Ca Mau's shrimp industry to develop sustainably and in a modern direction, the locality is building a production linkage chain between businesses providing services such as breeding stock, feed, and veterinary medicine as inputs for production.

Simultaneously, it is necessary to establish links between shrimp farmers and seafood processing and export businesses, and even with distributors and retailers, to ensure that shrimp production, processing, and distribution are part of a closed-loop chain.

Going forward, the locality will strengthen the transfer and application of technology, and promote the replication of effective farming models in the context of climate change. It will encourage the application of new, efficient, and environmentally friendly farming techniques such as Biofloc, models with minimal water changes, 2-3 stage farming, organic aquaculture, and energy-saving practices.

Reorganize production towards forming large-scale, concentrated farming areas linked to preservation, processing, and consumption along the value chain, based on leveraging regional advantages, meeting market demands, and adapting to climate change.

"The province of Ca Mau will soon organize a Shrimp Festival to introduce to domestic and international friends the potential and strengths of aquaculture and fisheries, the production, processing and consumption processes of products, with shrimp being the main product, contributing to connecting trade between regions, domestically and internationally."

"This affirms the position of shrimp as a key industry and a driving force for the sustainable economic development of Ca Mau province," said Mr. Le Van Su.

The Ca Mau Shrimp Festival and the Mekong Delta OCOP Product Connection Forum, themed “Ca Mau Shrimp Festival 2023 - Proud of Vietnamese Brands,” is a regional-scale event taking place from December 10-13.

The Ca Mau Shrimp Festival includes many prominent activities related to shrimp, such as: an exhibition and trade space for the shrimp industry and OCOP products with nearly 400 booths at Phan Ngoc Hien Square; a seminar on: Building a value chain for the Ca Mau shrimp industry, Current situation and solutions for sustainable development of the shrimp industry…

In addition, the event also includes conferences such as: Announcing the planning and investment promotion of Ca Mau province; summarizing the program of linkage and cooperation in tourism development between Ho Chi Minh City and the provinces and cities of the Mekong Delta; and connecting trade for OCOP products in the Mekong Delta region in 2023. Furthermore, various trade and tourism promotion programs are also organized.
