On October 25, TASS news agency reported that a military court in Saint Petersburg, Russia, sentenced four hackers accused of using ransomware to launch six-year prison sentences against Western companies.

Accordingly, this group belongs to the notorious Revil cybercrime gang and was arrested in January 2022 at the request of US law enforcement agencies.

Specifically, Revil has claimed responsibility for a number of ransomware attacks, including on US and Australian companies, as well as hospitals and public services around the world .

The gang raked in millions of dollars in payments. Authorities seized millions of dollars in cash and luxury cars from the gang.

At the time of the group's arrest in January 2022, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said the US government had shared data on the suspects with Moscow, a rare example of cooperation between the two countries.

Ransomware is a form of digital extortion in which hackers encrypt data or block services, demanding users pay to regain access.
