Can Tho pays teaching hour debt, reopens teacher promotion consideration after many years

TPO - After receiving the school system from Hau Giang and Soc Trang, Can Tho City is facing a shortage of teachers at many levels. To overcome this, the Can Tho education sector is urgently implementing solutions such as paying off teaching hours, considering promotions and reviewing job positions to stabilize staff for teaching and learning.

On the afternoon of October 16, at the press conference for the third quarter of 2025, Ms. Tran Thi Huyen - Acting Director of the Department of Education and Training (DoET) of Can Tho City said that the shortage of teachers does not only occur in Can Tho. After merging administrative units, Can Tho City received the original educational institutions from the old Hau Giang, the old Soc Trang and Can Tho City, and there are currently no major adjustments to the organizational structure.

Can Tho reviews job positions and adjusts school network planning

Regarding the shortage of teachers at 41 high schools in the old Soc Trang area, Ms. Tran Thi Huyen said that the Department has worked with the Department of Finance and the City People's Committee to soon pay the teachers' teaching hours debts. Currently, about 16 billion VND has been transferred from the Soc Trang budget, which will be used to pay salaries and related expenses. If there is still a shortage, the industry will submit additional funding.

Regarding the work of promoting teachers after many years of not organizing, the Department of Home Affairs has agreed to let the Department of Education and Training implement the promotion consideration according to the approved quota. The education sector is reviewing the job position project to submit to the People's Committee for approval. After approval, the units will receive the documents and consider the promotion according to the regulations: maximum 10% of grade I and no more than 50% of grade II.

In addition, Can Tho is also adjusting the planning of the school network after the merger. When the planning scheme is completed, the Department of Education and Training will publicly inform, ensuring synchronization and suitability to the reality of each locality.

According to Ms. Huyen, before the new school year 2025 - 2026, the education sector has mobilized more than 20 billion VND in social resources to support preparations for the new school year.

Can Tho Bridge 2, costing more than VND 28,500 billion, is expected to start construction in 2027.

Also at the press conference, Mr. Mai Van Tan - Director of the Department of Construction of Can Tho City said that the Can Tho 2 Bridge project was proposed according to the road and railway combination plan, with a total investment of about 28,500 billion VND. The project is being appraised by the Ministry of Construction. According to the plan, the project will start construction in 2027 and be completed in 2032. Can Tho 2 Bridge is planned to be about 6km east of the existing Can Tho Bridge, connecting with the IC2 intersection and the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway.
