NBC News reported on December 17th that US President-elect Donald Trump recently met with TikTok CEO Zhou Shuzi, amid concerns that the video -sharing app is about to be banned in the US.

Earlier, at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort on December 16, Trump expressed "sympathy" for TikTok and said his incoming administration would "consider" whether the app should be banned in the US.

According to a federal law signed into law by President Joe Biden, TikTok will be banned in the US starting January 19, 2025, unless the app's Chinese owner, ByteDance, agrees to divest.

On December 16, TikTok asked the US Supreme Court to block the law. In principle, President Biden could also decide to allow the app to postpone the implementation of the ruling for 90 days.

TikTok did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the meeting between Mr. Trump and Mr. Chau.

Trump softens his stance on TikTok, setting conditions for the US remaining in NATO.

During the press conference, Trump did not mention the meeting with Chau, but said he thought he won the election partly thanks to his use of TikTok.

"I won the youth election with 34 points. And there are people saying that TikTok is involved in that," he said.

Meanwhile, according to a nationwide poll, Trump lost among voters aged 18-29.

Trump attempted to ban TikTok in 2020, during his first term in the White House, but he was blocked by the courts.

He has shifted his stance this year, surprising some of his supporters but pleasing others, including major Republican donor Jeff Yass, a significant investor in TikTok.

Supporters of the ban include both Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. Congress , arguing that TikTok, being owned by China, poses a threat to user privacy and the information environment through its ability to manipulate content. TikTok has denied the allegations.
