Give your child a safe summer.

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên18/05/2023

Summer vacation is a precious time that children eagerly anticipate, a chance to play freely and rest after months of hard studying. However, children, engrossed in play, may forget their parents' warnings and fall into safety and health risks.

Parents should keep an eye on their young children.

Accidents and injuries during the summer months are a common concern for society as a whole, especially the recurring tragedy of drowning, which intensifies the pain in many families.

Before the school year's closing bells could even ring, tragic news of young people losing their lives in the raging waters kept pouring in.

During holidays and weekends, in the hot weather, groups of children would gather to go to the beach, wade in streams, and swim in ponds. Then, some children would be swept away by waves, lose their footing, or fall into whirlpools... The helping hands of strangers couldn't save them all. And so, some children never returned, turning their parents' hair white with age.

With the arrival of summer, numerous amusement parks, eco-tourism resorts, sports complexes, swimming pools, and beaches are bustling with activity. Taking their children out to play, many parents remain completely carefree and unconcerned about the countless health and even life-threatening risks that surround their children.

Summer is approaching for students. Parents should keep a close eye on their children during recreational activities to ensure they have a safe summer.

I've witnessed many parents taking their children swimming and then letting them freely plunge into the water while they casually sit and scroll through their phones. They don't care about crowded beaches, vast swimming pools, or slippery rivers and streams. Meanwhile, children, still eager for fun and lacking knowledge and skills, are easily deterred from venturing into deep water or engaging in risky activities.

I've witnessed many parents bringing their children to public places and leaving them to play and fend for themselves. They throw balls of all sizes haphazardly, not caring who they hit. They toss oversized logo puzzle pieces at strangers. Books on the shelves in bookstores are tossed around by children's playful, hasty grabbing and throwing...

We cannot constantly supervise our children, guiding them through play, or interfering with every obstacle they encounter, thereby depriving them of resilience and essential life skills. However, we absolutely cannot leave children to play and take care of their own safety.

The risks of children getting lost, being bullied, or suffering injuries can only be prevented if parents pay attention to reminding their children to follow general rules while playing and to stay away from risky or age-inappropriate activities. In particular, parents should put down their phones and supervise their children from a distance, especially when they are swimming or playing in the water, to minimize the risk of accidents and injuries!

In the summer, children love swimming in pools, rivers, and streams, so adults need to supervise them constantly when taking them swimming.

Students and the dangers lurking during the rainy season.

In addition, schools and families should regularly teach students about what to avoid and the dangers they may encounter so that they know how to protect themselves during this season.

Traffic accidents

This is a major concern, as parents themselves are not setting a good example for their children. Many parents transport students without helmets. Sudden rain showers also pose a danger when students speed on motorbikes and bicycles. Even parents don't wear helmets. Not to mention, some parents run red lights or lead their children across median strips to "get there faster"...

In addition, students need to be wary of overhead hazards, including: dangling power lines and cables that pose a risk of electrical leakage. Roads with large, lush trees, especially those with protruding trunks and branches covering the road, are prone to falling. This is a constant danger for everyone, especially students. Therefore, students should limit going outside during thunderstorms to avoid these dangers.

Drowning

Heavy rain and strong currents make it easy to fall. A moment of carelessness can easily lead to students being swept away by the current, especially those who don't know how to swim, and particularly elementary school students. Roads in many areas are in poor condition, creating dangerous ditches and potholes. In addition, manholes with damaged covers pose a constant threat during the rainy season. Authorities are often negligent in inspecting and replacing covers, leading to tragic deaths caused by accidents at manhole and drain openings.

Heatstroke, lightning strike

Heatstroke is very common during hot weather, and the risk of lightning strikes during the rainy season is no exception. There is a constant danger for students when the weather is excessively hot and there is heavy rain and strong winds.

To minimize dangers for students, adults (schools and families) need to teach students basic skills, show concern for them through practical actions, and be true role models for students to emulate.
