Multidisciplinary university does not mean having to train everything

VTC NewsVTC News12/01/2025

According to Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son, developing multidisciplinary universities does not mean training everyone in the same way others do.

This statement was made at the ceremony this morning (January 12th) to present the Prime Minister's decision on the transformation of the National Economics University into the National Economics University and the Ministry of Education and Training 's decision recognizing the University Council, the Chairman of the Council, and the Director of the National Economics University.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Nguyen Kim Son said that from now on, the name National Economics University will replace the name National Economics University. The difference is not only in removing the first word from the name but also in making way for the word "great" to come first, helping the university to strive for greatness in all aspects.

According to the head of the education sector, the difference between universities and colleges is not in size. Universities can also grow to a very large scale and can also have high-quality research and training results of international standards. What is important about universities is that they are large entities with an internal structure that requires high-level university management capabilities and expertise, aiming for development and growth.

The university model allows for greater autonomy and dynamism. This autonomy can extend down to the lowest-level units and to specialized groups and scientists. If the organizational model design does not aim to unleash the creative potential within the educational institution, then the transformation of the model will not yield much value.

Universities are an internal governance model geared towards multidisciplinary development; therefore, in the future, the National Economics University needs to aim for multidisciplinary and multi-field training while still leveraging its advantages, strengths, and traditional power.

The Minister also emphasized that being multidisciplinary does not mean training everyone according to what others do. It should not deviate from its core goals and mission. The identity and brand of the National Economics University need to be continued and developed within the new organizational model.

Furthermore, for the teachers and staff in the leadership team, the change in title from principal to director is not just a name change, but requires a new vision and a new management mindset to suit the different scale and nature of the entity being managed.

"The National Economics University has chosen to transform into a new development model – the university model – to undergo a qualitative change both internally and externally, demonstrating a determination to innovate and develop. This is its new aspiration and vision," the Minister said, expressing confidence in this new direction.

To achieve that goal, Minister Son requested the National Economics University to review and refine its development strategy; to promote and maintain its traditional strengths in economics, management, and business administration training, while also making transformations to align with current trends in training and research in the country.

The National Economics University needs to create internal mechanisms and regulations to better promote autonomy in accordance with the spirit of the Higher Education Law, and to foster the dynamism and creativity of its affiliated schools, units, and departments throughout the entire system.

The university needs to build a smart, modern university governance system, combined with university autonomy, decentralization, delegation of authority, proactive investment in depth, and maximum utilization of technology and artificial intelligence platforms.

Regarding organizational matters, each school, unit, and organization within the National Economics University needs to have a suitable autonomous mechanism, with its own functions and responsibilities, avoiding duplication, and must be an indispensable organic component, creating a complete and strong university whole, Minister Nguyen Kim Son instructed the university.

On November 15, 2024, the Prime Minister signed a decision to transform the National Economics University into the National Economics University – a public non-profit institution under the Ministry of Education and Training, with its own legal personality, seal, and bank account.

The National Economics University became the 9th university in Vietnam, alongside Hanoi National University, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Thai Nguyen University, Hue University, Da Nang University, Hanoi University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, and Duy Tan University. Among them, Duy Tan University is the first private university in the country.
