According to Aviation 24, on the evening of March 21st local time, two commercial aircraft en route from Copenhagen (Denmark) to Stavanger (Norway) had to return to Copenhagen airport due to concerns about a potential bomb attack.
A Scandinavian Airlines System aircraft was ordered to turn back upon entering Norwegian airspace. Another Norwegian aircraft received the same order shortly after takeoff.
All passengers on both flights were safely evacuated upon disembarking at the airport. Danish police said they would search the aircraft for dangerous objects.
Earlier that day, the Danish security and intelligence agency (PET) raised its threat level for terrorism, as well as threats targeting Danish interests abroad. PET stated that the threat had increased and was now at level 4/5 on the PET scale.
According to Michael Hamann, Director of the Terrorism Analysis Centre at PET, insults to the Quran and the conflict in the Middle East are significantly impacting the risk of terrorism in Denmark. PET believes these factors will continue to influence the threat level in 2024.
Danish police are conducting an investigation, while authorities are coordinating with Copenhagen airport management to regulate flights following the alert. Passengers will be transferred to alternative flights once the situation is resolved.
