According to the Ministry of National Defense , within the framework of the 36th Session of the Intergovernmental Coordination Committee on the Vietnam - Russia Tropical Center, on December 1, in Hai Phong, a flag-raising ceremony took place on ship 889 - Professor Gagarinsky.

Thus, the ship officially entered service with the Navy with the number 889 and the name of the ship Professor Gagarinsky is kept in Russian on the deck, to pay tribute and commemorate the famous Russian scientist .

The Professor Gagarinsky ship was handed over to Vietnam by Russia on May 11, 2025 in Vladivostok (Russian Federation). The Vietnamese crew, with support from the neighboring country, brought the ship back to Vietnam, docking on May 26.

According to the People's Army Newspaper, the Professor Gagarinsky ship is a new symbol of Vietnam-Russia cooperation and a common home at sea for scientists of the two countries, contributing to deepening the good traditional relationship and comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and the Russian Federation.

The 889-Professor Gagarinsky, a marine research vessel with the ability to operate in deep and offshore waters, will open a new chapter, allowing scientists to explore previously unexplored areas, helping to improve understanding of ecosystems, biodiversity and marine resources, thereby proposing solutions for conservation, restoration and rational use.

In addition, the ship will contribute to the modernization and enhancement of the capacity and effectiveness of the Vietnam - Russia Tropical Center for marine scientific research, helping the center to be fully proactive in designing research and organizing field surveys at sea. In particular, the ship helps improve Vietnam's offshore marine research capacity.

At the flag-raising ceremony on ship 889-Professor Gagarinsky, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Minister of National Defense, praised the Navy and the Vietnam-Russia Tropical Center for their close coordination in handing over, receiving the ship, and putting it into operation and use as planned.

This is not only a symbol of friendship, but also a motivation for scientists from both sides to continue contributing for the benefit of the two countries.

Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien assigned the Vietnam - Russia Tropical Center, the Navy and Russian partners to develop an annual scientific research coordination program, ensuring effective exploitation and use of ships, actively serving marine scientific research, worthy of the trust, expectations and meeting the interests of the two countries.
