Having displayed flowers for sale for the October 20th holiday for the past two days on Xô Viết Nghệ Tĩnh street (Bình Thạnh district), Ms. Nguyễn Thị Bích said that the wholesale and retail prices of roses have both decreased slightly compared to last year.
However, the store didn't dare import as much as in previous years for fear of unsold stock. "On October 19th, at this time every year, we would have sold about 30-40%, but today we've only sold over 20-25%. Hopefully, customers will buy more on October 20th," Ms. Bich said.
Selling roses at retail prices ranging from around 15,000 VND per flower and 200,000 to 700,000 VND per basket depending on the type, Mr. Do Hung Manh, the owner of a makeshift flower stall on Pham Van Dong Street (Thu Duc City), said that prices haven't increased but purchasing power is quite weak.
"I only dared to import 700-800 rose stems of various types, about 30% less than in previous years, along with a few sunflowers and daisies... to make beautiful flower baskets. But I'm worried about slow sales, so I might have to lower the price early, otherwise I'll have to throw them away," Mr. Mạnh worried.
Speaking to Tuổi Trẻ newspaper , Mr. Nguyen Minh, representative of Happy Flower shop (District 1), said that the flower market for October 20th this year is sluggish, with slow sales due to the difficult economic situation and people tightening their spending.
"The shop mainly focuses on more affordable bouquets, priced from 500,000 to 900,000 VND, reducing the number of large, expensive bouquets designed in previous years. Although there are still customers buying high-end bouquets, the number has decreased significantly," Mr. Minh said.
Mr. Ly Phu Qui, director of Dam Sen flower market (District 11), said that the amount of roses imported to the market on October 19th reached about 150-170 boxes (30-35 bunches/box, each bunch with 50 flowers). While the quantity of roses was lower than in previous years, the price was not as high as in previous years, and purchasing power was slow.
"On October 20th, the demand for flowers as gifts may increase, but the selling price is not expected to rise much, and may even decrease if there is still a large supply of flowers in the afternoon," Mr. Qui predicted.
Many flower growers in Lam Dong province report that the amount of flowers arriving in Ho Chi Minh City for the October 20th holiday this year is lower than in previous years due to unfavorable weather conditions leading to low yields. Additionally, they have had to significantly increase supply to the North, as that region was affected by previous storms and floods, resulting in very limited local supply.
