Group stage

In the northern qualifying round of the 2nd Vietnam Youth and Student Football Tournament - THACO Cup 2024, 9 teams were divided into 3 groups. The top teams in each group, along with the best second-place team, will advance to the play-off round to compete for a spot in the finals. However, before the final round of matches, the race was still undecided in any group.

In Group A, Bac Ninh University of Physical Education and Sports is leading with 3 points and a goal difference of +8. The University of Water Resources is second, also with 3 points and a goal difference of +7. The last-placed team, Phuong Dong University, has been eliminated with 0 points. In the final round, taking place at 2 PM on March 1st, the two teams will compete directly. The winning team will secure a spot in the play-offs as the Group 1 winner, while the second-place team will have to wait for the results in the remaining groups to compare points and goal differences.

The Phenikaa University team (in red) still has a chance to advance after defeating the Hanoi University of Civil Engineering team.

In Group B, Dai Nam University is leading with 4 points and a goal difference of +3. Second is the National Economics University with 1 point and a goal difference of 0. Hanoi University is last with 0 points and a goal difference of -3. This is the most complicated group, as all three teams still have a chance to advance. The National Economics University team will face Hanoi University in the final match.

If they win by 4 goals or more (or win by a margin of 3 goals but score 4 or more goals), the National Economics University team will take the top spot from the Dai Nam University team. Even if they win but cannot close the goal difference, 4 points would still be enough for the National Economics University team to feel somewhat secure when compared to other second-placed teams.

In the event of a draw, the National Economics University team would still be in second place but would certainly be eliminated (as they would only have 2 points, while other second-place teams would have 3 points). If they lose, the National Economics University team would lose their second-place position to the Hanoi University team.

In Group C, the Hanoi University of Physical Education and Sports team leads with 3 points and a goal difference of +4. The Phenikaa University team has 3 points and a goal difference of +1. The last-placed team, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, has been eliminated with 0 points. In the final round, the Hanoi University of Physical Education and Sports team will face Phenikaa. The winner will advance to the play-off round, while the loser will have to wait to compare points and goal difference with other second-placed teams.

Thrilling

Given the difference in strength, the National Economics University team has a very good chance of defeating the Hanoi University team in the final round. If so, the second-placed team in Group B will have 4 points. To compete in the play-off round, the second-placed teams in Groups A and C all need a minimum of 4 points, otherwise they will be eliminated.

The team from the Water Resources University is not yet guaranteed a spot in the next round.

In the event that the match between the Water Resources University team and the Bac Ninh University of Physical Education and Sports team results in a winner, the losing team will be eliminated early. The host team of the northern qualifying round faces a clear risk of elimination if they lose to the Bac Ninh University of Physical Education and Sports team tomorrow afternoon (March 1st). Conversely, the Bac Ninh University of Physical Education and Sports team will almost certainly be eliminated if they lose to the Water Resources University team.

If the match between the Water Resources University team and the Bac Ninh University of Physical Education and Sports team ends in a draw, it's highly likely both teams will advance. Besides the leading team, Bac Ninh University of Physical Education and Sports, the second-placed team, Water Resources University, will also have 4 points and a very high goal difference (+7). This is a goal difference that other second-placed teams in the group will find difficult to match.

With close scores and ample opportunities for competing teams, the northern qualifying round of the Vietnam Youth and Student Football Tournament promises to hold surprises right up to the final match.
