Yesterday (August 11th), the International Football Federation (FIFA) officially announced that Vietnamese-Bulgarian player Do Nguyen Thanh Chung (international name Chung Nguyen Do) has completed the procedure to convert his football citizenship from Bulgaria to Vietnam.
This means the midfielder, born in 2005, is officially eligible to play for the Vietnam U23 team in major tournaments in 2025 such as the 2026 U23 Asian Championship qualifiers (taking place in September), the 33rd SEA Games (taking place in December in Thailand), as well as at the national team level.

Notably, Chung Nguyen Do has just returned to Vietnam to play for Ninh Binh FC after a period playing in Bulgaria for Slavia Sofia. This is a promising signing, as the player born in 2005 has made his mark in Bulgarian football.
Last season, this defensive midfielder played 33 matches for Slavia Sofia and scored 2 goals. In the past, Chung Nguyen Do also played for Bulgaria's U17, U19, U20, and U21 teams. He was even considered for the Bulgarian national team in the future, but ultimately chose to represent his homeland, Vietnam.
According to Transfermarkt's valuation, Chung Nguyen Do is currently the most valuable U23 player in Southeast Asia, with a price tag of 400,000 euros. If called up to the Vietnamese national team, the 20-year-old would be the third most valuable player after two other overseas Vietnamese players, Jason Quang Vinh (500,000 euros) and Nguyen Filip (450,000 euros).
Chung Nguyen Do's eligibility to play for the Vietnamese national team at all levels is a welcome sign, especially with the 33rd SEA Games just under four months away. The striker, born in 2005, is seen as a breath of fresh air for the U23 Vietnam midfield if he is called up by coach Kim Sang Sik.
