VIBA rice varieties: A bridge in agricultural cooperation between Vietnam and Cuba
Within the framework of the 2019/25 rice cooperation project, Vietnam transferred 25 rice varieties to Cuba for testing in many ecological regions. After the evaluation process, the four most suitable varieties were recognized by Cuba for mass production from June 2025, including: VIBA17, VIBA76, VIBA51 and VIBA31. The name VIBA is a combination of VI (Vietnam) and BA (Cuba) - symbolizing the connection in rice variety selection and a testament to the traditional friendship between the two countries. At the same time, VIBA also marks sustainable cooperation in the field of agriculture and joint efforts towards food security and sustainable development.
According to Dr. Tran Vu Hai, an expert from the Mekong Delta Rice Institute, the new varieties have achieved outstanding yields in Cuba's harsh conditions. A report from the Cuban Grain Crops Research Institute shows that VIBA17 yields more than 8 tons/ha in the winter crop, VIBA76 more than 9 tons/ha, and VIBA51 over 7 tons/ha. In the Matanzas region, the average yield of the three varieties is 6.15 tons/ha, three times the national average. The shortened growing period of only 100-110 days helps farmers reduce costs, limit weather risks, and increase the number of crops.
This success opens up great opportunities for Vietnam in exporting rice and transferring technology to the Caribbean region. But beyond the economic significance, the VIBA fields also carry the emotional bond between Vietnamese experts and Cuban farmers – a living testament to the strong friendship between the two peoples.
