Prices at traditional markets increase sharply, supermarkets are stable

Over the past month, the green vegetable market in Ho Chi Minh City has seen strong price fluctuations, especially in traditional markets. Many popular leafy vegetables such as water spinach and Chinese cabbage have increased to 30,000 - 35,000 VND/bunch, twice as high as the previous period. This situation has prompted a segment of consumers to change their shopping habits, switching to supermarket systems and online sales channels to find a more stable supply in terms of both quality and price.

Vegetable prices at traditional markets have been continuously increasing over the past month.

In contrast to the market situation, large supermarket chains still maintain abundant supply and stable prices. At a Bach Hoa Xanh branch in Thu Duc City, items such as cucumbers are listed at VND38,000/kg, bitter melon VND50,000/kg and carrots VND35,000/kg. These prices are VND3,000-5,000/kg lower than those in the market. Staff here said that goods are continuously replenished in the morning and afternoon to ensure freshness.

Similarly, the Saigon Co.op system is also applying good prices for many essential items, such as white cabbage at VND9,900/kg, squash at VND29,900/kg and hydroponic lettuce at VND39,900/kg. The representative of the unit said that it is proactively increasing the output of imported goods from growing areas less affected by the weather and purchasing products from cooperatives to meet the increased demand at the end of the year.

Synchronous solutions to stimulate year-end consumption

Price stabilization programs of retail enterprises are part of the overall consumer stimulus plan of Ho Chi Minh City in December. Since the beginning of the month, many supermarkets have launched deep discount programs for vegetables, meat, seafood and fast-moving consumer goods.

Supply and price of green vegetables at supermarkets are still guaranteed.

According to plan, a number of major trade promotion activities will be held in the coming time:

  • Shopping Season Program: Starting from mid-December, allowing businesses to promote over 50%, combined with e-wallet payment incentives.
  • City Sale Event: Held at major shopping malls to attract consumers to shop before Tet.
  • Peak month of responsible green Tet: Many retail systems commit to keeping prices and expanding their shelves of safe, environmentally friendly products.

To increase supply, the Supply-Demand Connection Conference between Ho Chi Minh City and the provinces is scheduled to take place from December 19-21 in Vung Tau. This event is expected to add a large amount of goods to the Tet market, including fresh food and qualified vegetables.

In addition, the city also coordinates with the Labor Federation to develop special incentive programs for workers in export processing zones and industrial parks, helping them access essential foods at more reasonable costs. With synchronous solutions, Ho Chi Minh City is striving to ensure the supply and stabilize prices of essential goods, helping people feel secure when shopping during the peak season at the end of the year and the Lunar New Year 2026.
