Chu Lai Open Economic Zone - the first coastal economic zone in the country in the past 20 years, has attracted 237 investment projects, with a total registered capital of 93,500 billion VND (equivalent to 3.7 billion USD); becoming the driving force for socio-economic development, a large source of revenue for the budget of Quang Nam province in the past (accounting for 55-65% of the total annual budget revenue).
Mr. Nguyen Hong Quang, Head of the Management Board of Quang Nam Economic Zones and Industrial Parks, said that after the merger, Da Nang city has many new driving forces for development such as Lien Chieu Port, Free Trade Zone (in the north), while Chu Lai Open Economic Zone (in the south) has emerged as a bright spot, promising to be a growth driver in the coming period, contributing to achieving the growth target of 11-12%/year of Da Nang city.
Currently, Chu Lai Open Economic Zone has formed 14 industrial parks, of which 7 are operating with 165 projects implemented, creating jobs for about 50,000 local workers. Typically, Chu Lai - Truong Hai Automobile Mechanical Industrial Park has attracted 46 secondary projects, with a total investment capital of 83,000 billion VND, creating jobs for 13,000 workers with an average income of 7-8 million VND/person/month.
Da Nang leaders determined that the planning of Chu Lai Open Economic Zone must be one step ahead, ensuring comprehensiveness and long-term, consistent with the planning of the new Da Nang city. At the same time, many key projects must be implemented such as: dredging the Truong Giang River and building bridges across the river; completing coastal road 129 (Vo Chi Cong road); routes connecting the expressway, National Highway 1A with Vo Chi Cong road.
In particular, Chu Lai airport is planned to become a 4F international airport, expected to serve 10 million passengers/year; a type 1 port, capable of receiving 30,000 DWT ships (output in 2024 will reach more than 4 million tons).
The Cua Lo channel dredging project for 50,000-ton ships is also being promoted, creating more momentum for the development of the area. The People's Committee of Da Nang City is also studying and proposing to add the Non-Tax Zones in Chu Lai Open Economic Zone to the Da Nang Free Trade Zone (FTZ).
According to the leader of the Department of Industry and Trade of Da Nang, with 2 duty-free zones in Chu Lai Open Economic Zone (including the duty-free zone associated with Tam Hoa Port Area, with a scale of more than 744 hectares; the duty-free zone associated with Chu Lai Airport, with a scale of more than 223 hectares), when the Da Nang FTZ expands to the south in combination with these 2 duty-free zones, it will create new growth space for the city and the region.
