Hyundai Thanh Cong Vietnam Automobile Joint Stock Company (HTV) has just officially introduced the Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid model to the Vietnamese market, increasing competitiveness in the D-SUV segment with impressive design, advanced Turbo-Hybrid technology and world-leading safety standards. Santa Fe Hybrid is priced at 1,369 million VND (including VAT).

The appearance of Santa Fe Hybrid marks a strong shift in Hyundai Thanh Cong's electrification strategy, providing a powerful, smart, environmentally friendly mobility solution while still helping customers not have to change their daily car usage habits.

TMED High Performance Hybrid System

The technical highlight that separates the Santa Fe Hybrid from the crowd is the TMED (Transmission Mounted Electric Device) technology. Instead of using the CVT commonly found on Hybrid vehicles, Hyundai Motor equips this model with a 6-speed automatic transmission optimized specifically for Hybrid vehicles. The difference lies in Hyundai's application of exclusive Active Shift Control (ASC) technology.

Instead of using a traditional torque converter, the ASC system allows the electric motor to control gear shifting by monitoring the transmission's rotational speed at a frequency of 500 times/second. As a result, the electric motor actively synchronizes the rotational speed of the engine and the transmission, reducing gear shifting time by 30% (from 500ms to just 350ms).

The combination of geared transmission and ASC technology not only brings an exciting driving experience and smooth gear shifting like a luxury car, but also helps increase gearbox durability by minimizing friction during operation.

This solution, when combined with the HTRAC all-wheel drive system, provides flexible handling and a true, exciting driving experience.

Turbo - Hybrid powertrain

Different from conventional Hybrid models on the market, Santa Fe Hybrid possesses a Turbo - Hybrid power system exclusively researched and developed by Hyundai Motor. This is a sophisticated combination of the power of an internal combustion engine and the instant performance of an electric motor, providing an exciting driving experience.

The "heart" of the Santa Fe Hybrid is the SmartStream 1.6L Turbo gasoline engine. This engine uses continuously variable valve timing (CVVD) technology, allowing it to produce 180 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and maximum torque of 265 Nm at a wide rpm range of 1,500 ~ 4,500 rpm.

Accompanying the gasoline engine is an electric motor system using a 1.49 kWh Li-ion Polymer battery (270V, 5.5Ah). This electric motor provides 44.2 kW (equivalent to nearly 60 horsepower), directly supporting the gasoline engine. This perfect combination brings the total capacity of the Santa Fe Hybrid to 235 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and maximum torque of 367 Nm from 1,000 to 4,100 rpm. These are impressive numbers, making the Santa Fe the Hybrid model with the leading performance in the segment.

  • At low speeds: the electric motor plays a key role in helping the vehicle operate smoothly. In particular, thanks to the characteristic of reaching maximum torque instantly, the electric motor helps eliminate the feeling of turbo-lag often found on traditional engines, providing a smooth experience.
  • At high speed range: The intelligent computer system will distribute power between the gasoline engine and electric motor via HTRAC depending on actual operating conditions, ensuring the vehicle always operates in the most optimal power range.

The result of this technology is fuel consumption of only 5.94L/100km in extra-urban conditions and 6.37L/100km in mixed conditions (According to the parameters of the Vietnam Register) - impressive for a large D-size SUV.

To achieve outstanding performance and smoothness, Hyundai engineers have equipped the Santa Fe Hybrid with a series of advanced supporting technologies:

Integrated generator starter motor (HSG)

Unlike traditional engines that use separate starters and generators, the Santa Fe Hybrid integrates both into the new generation 13 kW HSG unit.

Not only does it act as a mobile power station to charge the battery during operation, the HSG also makes a difference when starting a gasoline engine. Thanks to its large capacity, the HSG pulls the engine to its optimal rpm and ensures adequate lubricating oil pressure before activating the ignition.

This mechanism completely eliminates any delay or vibration when starting, allowing the vehicle to be ready to roll immediately without having to wait for the engine to warm up or stabilize like a pure gasoline vehicle, while providing maximum engine protection in situations of continuous on/off.

Internal Permanent Magnet (IPM) Electric Motor

The car's electric motor uses IPM (Interior Permanent Magnet) technology with magnets located inside the rotor. This design not only increases performance and durability but also plays a core role in the regenerative braking system, converting kinetic energy into electricity to recharge the battery every time the car decelerates or goes downhill.

Li-ion Polymer Batteries: Safety and Space Optimization

The high-voltage battery system is protected by a ceramic coating and a shock-absorbing armor system, passing the most severe crash tests. In particular, this battery block and the 12V battery are cleverly arranged under the second row of seats, creating a spacious trunk space equivalent to the gasoline version, while also moving the vehicle's center of gravity to the middle to improve balance.

Santa Fe Hybrid makes a strong impression with the classic SUV "Boxy" design language, expressing strength and luxury. Using the modern N-Platform chassis, the car has dimensions of Length x Width x Height of 4,830 x 1,900 x 1,770 mm, wheelbase of 2,815 mm, providing a spacious and comfortable interior. The car's rims are 20 inches in size with 255/45R20 tires.

The front of the car stands out with adaptive headlights (HBA-LED) and daytime running lights in the signature H-shape of Hyundai. The grille is equipped with AAF (Active Air Flap) technology that automatically opens/closes the air intake, helping to optimize aerodynamics and reduce the impressive drag coefficient from 0.33 Cd to only 0.298 Cd - a remarkable step forward in performance and fuel economy.

The interior of the Santa Fe Hybrid follows the HMI (Human Machine Interface) principle, focusing on the user.

The centerpiece of the cockpit is the Panorama curved screen cluster including a digital dashboard and a connected 12.3-inch touchscreen entertainment screen. The car supports wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay connectivity, exclusive satellite navigation maps and a 360 SVM Camera.

Comfort is enhanced with a rotary electronic gear lever integrated behind the steering wheel, helping to free up saddle space. The electric seat system, position memory, integrated heating and ventilation (front seats) and heated steering wheel ensure maximum comfort in all weather conditions. In addition, the car is also equipped with a 15W dual wireless charger and a fast 27W USB-C charging port.

The Santa Fe Hybrid integrates paddle shifters behind the steering wheel with a dual function: it helps change acceleration and also acts as a button to customize the level of kinetic energy recovery (Regenerative Braking). In Eco/Smart mode, the driver can actively adjust the braking force to optimize the energy to recharge the battery.
