The al-Mawasi camp, a humanitarian safe zone in the southern Gaza Strip that is home to hundreds of thousands of people, was hit by an Israeli airstrike on Saturday. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Salama's death would "significantly limit Hamas' military capabilities".

According to Israel, this person is one of the closest associates of Hamas's number one military leader - Mohammed Deif and was involved in planning Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7.
The IDF said Salama was killed, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there was still no absolute certainty about Deif's fate. Israel said it had targeted both Deif and Salama.
Hamas said early Sunday that Deif was still alive. It was not clear whether he was in the area at the time of the attack.
Deif has been one of Israel’s most wanted men for decades. Israel blames him for the killing of numerous civilians and soldiers. Israel has attempted to assassinate him at least six times before.
Gaza health authorities said at least 92 people were killed and 300 wounded in an airstrike that targeted two Hamas officials on Saturday.
