Early first aid in the community is an important factor in helping patients have a chance to live before receiving care and treatment from a professional medical team.

Recently, at Nha Trang beach ( Khanh Hoa province), Mr. Tran Do Trong Dai - a security guard, currently working at Khanh Hoa General Hospital, happened to be present and promptly provided first aid to a patient who had cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest. The patient was then transferred to the hospital and has recovered.

Mr. Dai recounted that when he discovered Mr. TVT (67 years old, Nha Trang ward) walking up from the sea, exhausted, and collapsed on the sand, showing signs of respiratory arrest and unconsciousness, he quickly performed first aid, chest compressions, artificial respiration, and called the 115 Emergency Center; at the same time, he called for help from people around.

Mr. Dai was trained in first aid when he started working for the security company. While working as a security guard at the 115 Khanh Hoa Emergency Center, he witnessed and learned more about the actions of the doctors and nurses there when performing emergency operations.

Thanks to that, he gradually perfected the method of performing first aid in cases when necessary. Therefore, when encountering an emergency situation in real life, Mr. Dai boldly performed first aid for the victim and it was effective.

On the morning of July 23, patient TVT's health improved and he was no longer on a ventilator. Mr. T's family sent their sincere thanks to Mr. Dai and the medical team at the 115 Emergency Center, Khanh Hoa General Hospital.

Through his story, Mr. Dai hopes that when people encounter similar situations, they can boldly perform first aid measures to save people.

According to Dr. Le Tran Anh Thi, Director of the 115 Emergency Center of Khanh Hoa province, the above story is a case received by the unit on the morning of July 20, 2025.

From the time the call was received until the medical staff of the Center arrived at the scene, it took only 3 minutes. During the call, the medical staff instructed the first aid person to stay calm and perform initial measures at the scene.

At the time of receiving the patient at the beach, Mr. T had fallen into a coma, had stopped breathing and had stopped breathing completely, his pupils did not respond to light; there was still sand on his body, and there was no nasal or oral secretions.

The patient was diagnosed with cardiorespiratory arrest suspected to be due to cardiovascular disease. The doctors and nurses performed emergency treatment on the spot with external cardiac compression; intubation, oxygen balloon injection; and Adrenaline injection (1mg) via endotracheal tube and vein.

After 10 minutes of resuscitation, Mr. T began to have a pulse again, a gasp reflex, and a pale pink skin color. The patient was transferred by ambulance to the Emergency Department, Khanh Hoa General Hospital; then transferred to the Intensive Care - Anti-Poison Department for further treatment and monitoring.

Doctor Le Tran Anh Thi highly appreciated the initial first aid actions of the people in the community, because this is the "golden" time to save victims before professional medical staff arrive.

During the past few summer months, on the beach of Nha Trang Bay, there were 5 cases of patients with symptoms of cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest. Thanks to the support of local people in the initial first aid activities under the guidance of the 115 Emergency Center, all the patients passed the "door of death" and their health gradually recovered.

“The hands of the community in providing first aid to patients with cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest are very important. They are the first to approach the patient at the “golden” moment to save lives, creating miracles, supporting the patient to have more chances to live.

When someone is not confident or does not know how to give first aid, feel free to call the 115 Emergency Center. The staff here will give you specific instructions on how to save people," Dr. Le Tran Anh Thi encouraged.

To safely and effectively perform first aid measures in the community for patients with respiratory arrest such as drowning, electric shock, babies choking on milk, etc., Dr. Le Tran Anh Thi has instructed 3 important steps.

First, take the victim to a safe place, away from danger (isolate the power source, lift the victim out of the water...); then approach, assess the patient's condition (check heart rate, pulse) and call 115, turn on the speakerphone to receive instructions on first aid on the spot; at the same time, call for help from people around.

Finally, the most important thing in this sequence is to perform external chest compressions, which need to be done continuously for 10 minutes without releasing the hand, the compression position is right on the chest, and the pressure is just enough.

Recently, medical staff of Khanh Hoa 115 Emergency Center have been transferred and trained in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and trauma from domestic and international doctors in a professional and specialized spirit.

Currently, the Center has conducted training and transferred first aid and community rescue measures to a number of units in Khanh Hoa province.../.
