Take care
For many years, fish farming has been the main source of income for many farmers in Tu Ky district. Each household is constantly researching and applying techniques to increase productivity, reduce costs, and increase income.
As an experienced aquaculture farmer in Gom village (Dan An commune), Nguyen Dinh Tam's family consistently achieves high fish yields in the area. With 9 sao (approximately 0.9 hectares) dedicated to traditional fish farming such as grass carp, common carp, and tilapia, their yield typically reaches 18-20 tons per season, with some seasons even reaching 23 tons. Not only Tam's family, but also other households like Nguyen Dinh Thang and Nguyen Dinh Dai have achieved similarly high yields.

Speaking about the secret to high-yield fish farming, Mr. Tam said that many factors are needed, but the core is the quality of the fish fry. The fish fry must be purchased from reputable sources with clear origins, and during transportation, strong impacts must be avoided. They must also be released according to the season. During the farming process, small and weak fish must be regularly removed, and the stocking density must be maintained to maximize feed utilization and create a well-ventilated environment. The water quality must be good. During weather changes, after rain or during intense heat, measures must be taken to treat the water. The aeration system in the pond must always be running to increase oxygen levels for the fish.
"During the care process, you shouldn't overfeed the fish because fat fish are more susceptible to disease. I combine the use of water from the Dinh Dao River and a drilled well. It's necessary to regularly check the water quality to detect any abnormalities and make timely adjustments," Mr. Tam said.

The family of Mr. Nguyen Huu Doan in Nghi Khe village (Tan Ky commune) has more than 11 hectares of aquaculture land. Thanks to the application of various methods, his fish farming productivity reaches 30-32 tons/hectare/season.
Speaking about his family's fish farming experience, besides the fish fry and water source, Mr. Doan said that it's important to calculate the appropriate amount of feed for the fish, avoiding overfeeding or underfeeding. The fish pond is regularly inspected to detect any abnormalities and take timely corrective measures. He uses an automatic feeding system to reduce costs and increase economic efficiency...
Quality building

Taking advantage of the large rivers flowing through the district, the People's Committee of Tu Ky district encourages farmers to expand the area for aquaculture. The district currently has 1,783 hectares of aquaculture, with an average yield of 9 tons/hectare/season. Farmers raise 1.5 crops per year.
To improve the productivity and quality of aquaculture, Tu Ky district has established a liên khu (inter-regional) aquaculture farming area in the communes of Tai Son, Quang Phuc, and Tan Ky, covering nearly 300 hectares and attracting 455 households. These households receive training in aquaculture techniques and visit model farms to apply the knowledge to their own fish farming. As a result, the productivity of these households reaches 30-35 tons/ha/season, with some households achieving 45-60 tons/ha/season. This productivity is higher than the district average of 21-50 tons/ha/season. Revenue per hectare of fish farming reaches 500-700 million VND, and after deducting expenses, farmers earn a profit of 150-175 million VND/ha.

Along with increasing productivity, farmers in Tu Ky always prioritize product quality. Nguyen Huu Doan, from Nghi Khe village (Tan Ky commune), said that fish must be raised for a sufficient amount of time, at least 7 months, before harvesting so that the fish meat is firm and not mushy. He limits the use of drugs and biological products. He improves water quality by using a combination of well water and river water. When the fish are ready for harvest, he also reduces the amount of feed to avoid waste and to ensure the fish are firm.
To solidify its position in the market, the People's Committee of Dan An commune is currently planning to develop several aquaculture areas that meet VietGAP standards. "We have determined that focusing on improving quality is essential for farmers' products to stand firm in the market. The commune will implement appropriate measures to improve the quality of fish and other local aquatic products in the coming time," said Mr. Pham Son Tung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Dan An commune.
