(CLO) A recently published, extensive study has revealed an alarming trend: Public trust in news is declining. This decline is particularly pronounced in countries where people are shifting from watching television news to using social media for information.
The study, led by Richard Fletcher, Director of Research at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (RISJ), analyzed data from 46 countries over more than a decade. He and his colleagues found a strong link between declining trust in news and the increased use of social media as a primary source of news.
However, researchers also note that this relationship is more complex than we might think. In countries with a high degree of press freedom, people tend to lose faith in traditional news when these media outlets are suspected of bias or dishonesty.
Conversely, in countries with tight press control, people may turn to social media as an alternative source of information, potentially exposing them to misinformation and fake news, thus eroding their trust in news in general.
The decline in trust in news is a serious problem that requires journalists, media platforms, and policymakers to find effective solutions.
In addition to social media use, research also indicates that certain groups tend to trust news more, such as women, the elderly, and those without a college degree. However, this correlation is not always clear and can vary depending on the country and time period.
The United States is a prime example of polarization in news trust. Americans tend to trust media outlets that align with their political views, leading to deep divisions within society.
Although research has provided insights into the link between social media use and trust in news, many questions remain to be answered. For example, researchers are investigating whether negative comments on social media influence users' trust in these platforms.
Experts believe that the decline in trust in news is a serious problem, requiring journalists, media platforms, and policymakers to find effective solutions. Enhancing transparency, diversifying sources of information, and building trust with audiences are crucial elements in restoring public confidence in journalism.
