Hurricane Milton, with winds reaching 209 km/h, is expected to make landfall in Florida, USA, on the night of October 9-10 (local time). This is the second major hurricane to hit the area in just two weeks.
According to the US National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Milton has weakened to a Category 4, the second highest level on the US five-category hurricane classification system.
However, the storm's coverage has increased significantly, and it is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain, with waves reaching 4.5 meters when it makes landfall, expected between 9 and 11 PM (local time).
The National Weather Service issued 90 tornado warnings on October 9-10, a record number for a single day, and at least 11 tornadoes were reported in Florida that day.
The storm is expected to make landfall on the southwest coast of Florida and could wreak havoc in areas already reeling from Hurricane Helene nearly two weeks ago. Almost the entire west coast of Florida is under a hurricane warning, with over 1 million people ordered to evacuate and power outages potentially lasting for days.
According to Governor Ron DeSantis, more than 30,000 Florida residents are currently in hurricane shelters, and these locations have the capacity to accommodate up to 200,000 people.
US President Joe Biden canceled his trips to Angola and Germany to focus on responding to Hurricane Milton. President Biden had previously approved the Florida governor's request to declare a federal state of emergency for Milton. He called Milton the hurricane of the century and urged all residents in the storm's path to comply with evacuation orders.
President Biden said he had spoken with the governors and mayors of the affected cities and pledged all necessary resources to respond to the storm. He also said his administration would pressure companies to continue stabilizing prices for gasoline, airfare, and other essential goods.
In addition to the 1,000 federal personnel in Florida, the Biden administration has deployed an additional 1,200 search and rescue personnel from federal agencies, 500 ambulances, 30 amphibious vehicles, helicopters, and boats for rescue efforts.
To date, at least six airports in Florida have closed and nearly 2,000 flights have been canceled.
