Norway has just closed its embassy in Uganda, ending 19 years of diplomatic presence in the East African country. On social media X, the Norwegian embassy announced: "The embassy is now closed but Norway continues to cooperate with Uganda."
Speaking at an earlier event, Ugandan Foreign Minister Odongo Jeje Abubakher highlighted “the strength and tangible results of the Uganda-Norway relationship over the years, expressing Uganda’s deep appreciation for this partnership”.
Norway has closed five diplomatic missions abroad by 2022. The decision to close its embassy in Uganda, which also serves Rwanda and Burundi, was first announced in October last year, signaling some ongoing changes in Oslo’s diplomatic presence abroad. Norway funds a variety of projects in Uganda, including education, health, agriculture and refugee assistance.
