As the first student of the school to win first prize in the provincial excellent student contest, Phan Cong Truong Va chose to pursue enlightenment instead of religion.

Born and raised in the mountainous area of Ky Anh district ( Ha Tinh ), Phan Cong Truong Vu, a student at Ky Lam High School, always knew that only by pursuing education could he have a bright future and help his parents have less hardship.

Over the years, Truong Vu has never been discouraged and has tried to find ways to overcome his biggest obstacle, his eye defect, to achieve good academic results.

Overcoming the barrier of visual impairment

From the very first days of school, Vu noticed that his eyesight was much different from that of his peers. In first grade, he was assigned to sit in the third row of desks, but he still could not see the words clearly when looking at the board and everything became blurry over time.

Despite visiting many hospitals, Vu's eyesight still did not improve, only reaching 3-4/10.

Despite visiting many hospitals, Vu's eyesight still did not improve, only reaching 3-4/10.

It was not until he was in sixth grade that his family was able to take Vu to see a doctor and get glasses. However, this solution only partially improved his vision and Vu still could not see the words on the board clearly even though he sat in the front row.

“My parents are both manual laborers, their income is just enough for food and clothing, so it took them a long time to have me go for an eye exam. Although I have visited many places and hospitals, I still haven’t been able to find the right glasses. The current glasses can only help me improve my eyesight to a level of 3-4/10,” Vu said.

His classmates gradually became familiar with the image of the boy with thick glasses who always needed help in every class. For short lectures, Vu would ask his deskmate to take notes for him or copy along with him, but for large lessons, the male student had to ask the teacher for permission to use his phone to take pictures to copy at home.

The visual impairment has become a major obstacle in Vu’s life and his pursuit of knowledge. Every time he attends a gifted student review class in the evening, he has to go with a friend near his house, because his eyes cannot see clearly the obstacles on the road, and it would be very dangerous for him to go alone.

Or even with something as simple as looking at the Atlas of Geography, the male student still cannot see small details clearly even when looking closely. This forced Vu to ask for a PDF file online to enlarge it, only this way can he observe.

“The biggest obstacle is my eyes, but I have never used that as a reason to give up. The biggest motivation that helps me keep trying is finding my passion and having a destination to aim for,” Vu said.

Set a record for the village school

Vu has had a love affair with Geography since grade 8 after joining the team to participate in the district's excellent student competition and winning second prize.

However, that is not the highest achievement the male student has achieved in 17 years of schooling. A few days ago, everyone burst into happiness when Vu became the first student to bring home first prize in the provincial Geography competition for this village school. This achievement far exceeded the expectations of teachers and Vu himself.

“The moment we heard the results, my teachers and I couldn’t contain our emotions. I never thought I would get such a high score,” the male student shared.

Since the day Vu won first prize, the small house deep in the village was filled with laughter, questions, and encouragement. This was also the first time Vu saw his parents so happy and proud.

“The worry about making a living makes my parents age faster than their real age, and the wrinkles on their faces are more common. I always remind myself that if my parents try so hard for me but I still can’t succeed, it’s a big mistake,” Truong Vu shared.

In the near future, the young man wants to focus all his time on studying in class to pursue his dream of becoming a teacher. Vu plans to enroll in the Geography Pedagogy major at the University of Education ( Da Nang University) to reduce the burden of tuition and living expenses.

Having been with Vu throughout his journey, Ms. Nguyen Thu Huong, a teacher at Ky Lam High School, said that the young student not only achieved high academic results but was also an exemplary Youth Union Secretary with a high sense of responsibility.

"Vu is a special student that I have taught and been a homeroom teacher for a long time. His eyes are nearsighted, astigmatic, farsighted and he can barely read the words on the board even though he sits in the front row, so Vu is given 'special permission' to use his phone to take pictures of what is written on the board, then enlarge it and take notes," Ms. Huong shared. In addition to his good academic achievements, Vu is also an energetic and enthusiastic Secretary and always completes all assigned tasks well, bringing the class movement up.
