On June 28th, K Hospital announced that its doctors had successfully treated a rare case of a patient with a massive tumor weighing 8kg in their abdomen.
According to the report, the patient is LKP (23 years old, from Son La ). The patient's family stated that recently, the patient noticed her abdomen getting larger but thought it was just weight gain and didn't seek medical attention. Only when her abdomen became abnormally large did she have an ultrasound at a local hospital. The results revealed a very large tumor in her abdomen, and she was subsequently transferred to K Hospital for treatment.
Here, the patient underwent necessary tests, including CT scans, ultrasounds, and blood tests, which revealed a solid tumor occupying the entire abdominal cavity, approximately 40cm in size. The initial diagnosis was soft tissue sarcoma.

Soft tissue sarcoma is a type of malignant cancer that originates in the soft tissues of the body (including muscle, tendons, fat, lymphatic tissue, blood vessels, and nerves). These cancers can develop anywhere in the body but are found primarily in the chest and abdomen.
According to Dr. Ha Hai Nam, Deputy Head of the Department of Abdominal Surgery I at K Hospital, upon admission, the patient's excretory function was stable, but due to the extremely large tumor, which occupied the entire abdominal cavity and compressed organs such as the liver, pancreas, bladder, and colon, the patient experienced discomfort and shortness of breath.
According to Dr. Nam, in this case, the lesion is too large; if not surgically removed, the tumor will obstruct the function of other organs in the abdominal cavity, compress organs, and affect the patient's quality of life, health, and even life itself. Without surgery, there is no other viable treatment option.
Assessing the difficulties of the surgery, Dr. Nam said that the large tumor occupied the entire abdominal cavity, and the initial prognosis indicated that a kidney might have to be removed to completely excise the tumor, to prevent rapid recurrence.
" To remove this tumor, we carefully discussed the issue of controlling blood loss during surgery and especially the possibility of heart failure complications because the tumor was so large that after removal, a significant amount of blood would be pumped back to the heart, causing the atria to dilate, which could lead to heart failure. The case was considered very carefully; despite the many challenges, it still needed to be performed ," said Dr. Ha Hai Nam.
On the morning of June 26th, a surgical team consisting of gastroenterologists and urologists performed surgery on the patient.
Doctors noted that the surgery had clearly defined advantages and disadvantages. The advantages included the patient's first surgery, the patient being relatively young, a better chance of recovery, and relatively well-defined boundaries between the tumor and the surrounding organs, allowing for separation from the liver, pancreas, and colon.
The significant challenge was that the tumor surrounded the right kidney, with the right ureter completely enclosed within it. The doctors had to meticulously dissect each part of the tumor. Upon reaching the area where the tumor met the kidney and ureter, they were forced to remove a portion of the ureter because it was entirely within the tumor and could not be separated. The patient received 3 units of blood and hemodynamic adjustments.
With thorough preparation, the surgical team completely removed the 8kg tumor, preserved the patient's kidney, cut a portion of the ureter, and then successfully reconnected it.
During surgery, the gross morphology of the tumor appeared to be liposarcoma, which is a type of connective tissue cancer, or fatty tumor.
Currently, the patient's health is gradually stabilizing, and they are being monitored and cared for at the hospital.
